eliquis-logoA New York plaintiff filed an Eliquis bleeding death lawsuit on behalf of her mother who allegedly died after suffering from serious Eliquis side effects.

According to the Eliquis bleeding death lawsuit, the plaintiff’s late mother, Patricia H., began taking Eliquis at the direction of her doctor to treat atrial fibrillation.

However, Patricia began to suffer from serious Eliquis side effects from August 19, 2014 until her death on January 22, 2015.

During this time, Patricia allegedly suffered from severe physical, economic and emotional injuries because of Eliquis.

Ultimately, Patricia suffered from an intracerebral hemorrhage which led to her Eliquis bleeding death on January 22, 2015.

The Eliquis bleeding death lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including defective design, manufacturing defect, failure to warn, product liability, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent concealment and violation of consumer protection laws, among others.

The lawsuit also added counts of loss of consortium, survival action and wrongful death.

What is Eliquis?

Eliquis (apixaban) is a popular blood thinner drug manufactured by Bristol-Myers Squibb. Eliquis belongs to a relatively new class of drugs known as Factor Xa Inhibitors, a class of drugs that has begun to replace warfarin as the accepted standard for blood thinners.

Unfortunately, Eliquis and others in its class have been linked with of serious Eliquis side effects, including Eliquis bleeding complications.

For most patients treated with the drug, Eliquis side effects are mild and go away on their own. These side effects include nausea, easy bruising and minor bleeding. For others, however, Eliquis side effects may become extreme and even life-threatening.

Eliquis Bleeding Death

Internal bleeding is a common side effect in blood thinners, since these drugs are used to stop blood clots from forming. In most cases, blood clots are dangerous, which is why blood thinners are used to treat clotting.

However, in situations such as a car accident, emergency surgery or internal bleeding, blood clots are one of the body’s only defenses to avoid bleeding too much.

When a patient is on a blood thinner like Eliquis, their body can no longer form these life-saving blood clots.

Warfarin and other blood thinners have antidotes to quickly counteract this effect and enable the body to clot again, but Eliquis has no such antidote.

This means that in dangerous internal bleeding emergencies, Eliquis patients may be in much greater danger than those who took another kind of blood thinner drug which may result in an Eliquis bleeding death.
