Mirena IUD Side Effects Become Hot FDA Topic

By Andrea Gressman

Mirena IUD birth controlThe Mirena IUD was approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration in the year 2000. Since that time it has become a very popular birth control option across the country. However, many women have discovered that the Mirena IUD might not be all it was cracked up to be. It was recently reported that Mirena was in the top 20 most common searches on the FDA’s official website in the timeframe of August of 2012 to October of 2012.

It has been estimated that nearly 2 million woman have chosen to use the Mirena IUD as their birth control option. When looking at the implant device it comes in the shape of a “T”. It is made up of soft plastic and is inserted vaginally by a medical professional.

After its original approval in 2000 by the FDA, the FDA went on to approve the Mirena IUD to also treat “heavy menstrual bleeding in women who use intrauterine contraception for pregnancy prevention” in October of 2009.

It is only speculation at this point as to why the Mirena IUD was such a popular search on the FDA site but with so many women now opting to file Mirena lawsuits it isn’t hard to imagine that many of these searches were from women who have experienced negative Mirena side effects and are looking for answers.

There have been a number of very serious Mirena IUD side effects reported to the FDA as well as those who have filed Mirena lawsuits with many of the same claims. Some of these side effects include the following:

* Group A streptococcal sepsis
* Embedment of the device in the uterine wall
* Pelvic inflammatory disease (PID)
* Perforation of the uterine wall or cervix

According to the Journal of the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, these are very serious side effects and often result from a uterine perforation. They also reported that the conditions listed above may include the following:

* penetration of the folds that connect the intestines to the abdominal wall
* perforation and obstruction of the large and small bowel
* bowel infarction( described as “bowel death”)
* recto-vaginal fistula – the latter is an opening between the rectum and the vagina
* rectal strictures

They went on to report that the perforation and embedment may require surgical correction.
