Mirena IUD Lawsuit Only Option for Many Side Effect Victims

By Andrea Gressman

Mirena IUD birth controlAlthough women continue to pick the Mirena IUD for their birth control option there are a number of campaigns out there that are determined to make women aware of the potential side effects the IUD presents. Some of these side effects are so severe that they are actually life-threatening. One particular recourse that a number of women have used in order to receive compensation for their medical expenses and lost wages from Mirena side effects is to file a Mirena injury lawsuit.

The Mirena IUD received its approval from the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the year 2000. It is implanted into the woman’s body and releases a hormone, which is the synthetic version of levonorgestrel. It has been approved to stay in place for up to 5 years from the time it was placed.

It has been reported that the FDA has received over 45,000 side effect reports involving the Mirena IUD. Some of the Mirena side effects included in these reports are:

  • Damage to blood vessels
  • Embedding of the Mirena IUD in the uterus
  • Migration of the Mirena IUD outside the uterus
  • Organ damage
  • Uterine perforations

Mirena side effects have resulted in the need for surgery in order to repair the damage and remove the IUD in many situations. In some cases women have had to undergo a hysterectomy in order to correct the issues that the Mirena implant caused.

There are also a number of women who have actually become pregnant despite using Mirena birth control, and due to the severe side effects associated with the implant both the life of the mother and the life of the baby were put at risk. The FDA issued a warning stating that 50% of women who use the Mirena IUD and become pregnant will have an ectopic pregnancy, which is extremely dangerous for the mother. The Mirena IUD has also caused women to have miscarriages as well as other complications during their pregnancies. Some women have even become infertile due to the Mirena IUD.

It is important that women who used Mirena birth control and experienced side effects to contact an experienced Mirena lawsuit attorney right away. Filing a Mirena IUD lawsuit may be your only option for receiving the compensation you deserve for the injuries you have experienced.
