Mirena IUD Brings Complicated Issues & Side Effects
By Christina Drury
Millions of women each year turn to contraceptives as a means of preventing pregnancies. The Mirena IUD happens to be one of the popular alternatives to birth control pills because it is meant to be simple. Implantation of the Mirena IUD is quick and relatively painless and it remains in place for up to five years before any changes are needed.
With the insertion of the Mirena IUD, it is necessary for women to perform periodical checks to ensure that the device is still in place. When the device is not located, it can be cause for concern, especially when it is combined with pelvic pain. Furthermore, incidents where the IUD could not be located, even with the help of an ultrasound, shows that there is need for more warnings associated with the use of Mirena.
Mirena as a Form of Contraceptive
Women who use the Mirena IUD do so to prevent pregnancy. It is a plastic device that is inserted into the uterus through the cervical opening. Typically when contraceptives are marketed, the manufacturer is able to explain exactly how the device or medication works. Bayer is not able to do this, even releasing claims that they are unsure exactly how Mirena works. Instead, with the Mirena IUD, it appears that Bayer catered advertising toward “busy housewives” in an attempt to convince them that not only will using the Mirena IUD boost their libido, but it will also make them feel and look better.
Deceptive Mirena IUD Marketing
Effective marketing has a way of drawing a target audience in, especially with a device that claims to prevent pregnancy. However, in order for marketing to be truthful, the manufacturer needs to be able to list the possible Mirena side effects, and in this case Bayer failed to do so. They released a small list of what may happen, but failed to acknowledge that the device could be subject to expulsion, spontaneous migration or even vaginal hemorrhages. Additionally, there is also no mention of the fact that women could become pregnant while using the Mirena IUD and subsequently miscarry.
More Mirena Lawsuits are Surfacing
Due to flaws with Mirena — namely failure to warn prospective patients of complications Ð many Mirena IUD lawsuits are being filed on a regular basis. Women who have experienced significant pain as well as spontaneous migration of the device are seeking answers from Bayer. Unfortunately, Bayer is not releasing any information due to pending Mirena litigations.
Several women have had to undergo laparoscopic surgery in an effort to locate and remove the Mirena IUD after it failed to remain in place. Extreme cases of Mirena lawsuits show that damage was done to other internal organs after the IUD came in contact with them.
Women who have turned to the Mirena IUD as a means of contraception should have their complaints evaluated by an attorney who is already involved in pending litigations for the best opportunity for possible compensation.
