Lawsuit Says Sex Pill Caused Man to Fracture Penis
By Amanda Antell
A 29-year-old Texas man is suing supplement manufacturer Haute Health LLC for injuries he allegedly sustained from their natural male enhancement pill VirilisPro. Adrian Carter alleges that in direct result of using the drug, his penis fractured in a motel last year and left him unable to have sex or produce children.
On the day in question in 2012, Carter states that he ingested a VirilisPro pill in the early morning in preparation for a rendezvous that night. According to Haute Health’s website, VirilisPro is a male enhancement pill that claims to give men a longer and harder erection, as well as enlargement and more intense orgasms. The sex supplement also claims to lower a man’s recovery time needed to have sex again, and increases sexual stamina.
The lawsuit states that during intercourse, Carter started experiencing extreme pain and noticed blood had started spurting out of his penis. He was immediately taken to the emergency room, where the doctors had to “deglove” his penis in order repair his urethra, which had completely detached. According to medical testimony, degloving a penis is when the skin from the penis is removed. This is a highly complicated medical procedure and is typically only done by specialists.
Due to the traumatic nature of his injury and the severity of the surgery, it resulted in Carter being unable to have sex or produce children. Carter was released from the hospital several days later, but a catheter remained in place for three days. According to court documents, the doctors and surgeons told him he may never be able to have an erection again or be able to father children .He was also told his ureters may close, leaving him to be permanently unable to urinate naturally.
Carter’s lawyers states that VirilisPro was poorly labeled and was defective as well as unreasonably dangerous to be used by consumers. Haute Health argues that VirilisPro is made with only natural ingredients to prevent harmful side effects, and that his allegations that the sex supplement caused his penis to fracture are not possible. Most penis fractures are caused by rough sex, according to experts.
While severe, Carter’s case is not uncommon amongst sexual enhancement supplement injuries. Some lawyers have criticized the FDA for their lack of involvement in cases such as Carter’s, claiming that the agency should not allow such dangerous products to enter the market. The FDA states that it does not regulate dietary supplements in the same ways they do food and drugs. Furthermore, the dietary supplement manufacturer is responsible for ensuring that their product is safe before marketing it. However, if the agency finds a supplement unsafe, they can take actions to remove it from shelves.
As of now, Carter is seeking damages for medical compensation, pain and suffering, and other punitive charges. The charges he’s bringing against Haute Health include negligence, false advertising, concealing information, and misrepresenting a product. This case is still pending.
