A man whose wife died from a pulmonary embolism caused by taking a generic version of the birth control Yaz has recently filed a wrongful death lawsuit against the drug’s manufacturer, Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals Inc. Plaintiff D.S. alleges in the Yaz lawsuit that his wife, S.S., began taking Gianvi – a generic version of Yasmin and Yaz – in August of 2010. She then passed away due to a pulmonary embolism on January 1, 2011. The Yaz lawsuit goes on to claim that the manufacturer was aware of the birth control’s life-threatening side effect risks. However, they failed to properly warn the patients, the medical community, or the general public of those side effect risks. It is also claimed that the manufacturer failed to provide an alternative that was a safer option. D.S. is now seeking a Yaz lawsuit settlement in excess of $350,000 due to the personal injuries his wife experienced as well as his own loss of companionship, or loss of consortium. He is also seeking compensation for the economic loss of his wife as well as both her medical and funeral expenses.
Yaz Linked to Blood Clot Side Effects and Other Serious Injuries
Yaz and Yasmin have been in the news regularly for their severe side effects. Gianvi and Ocella are both generic versions of the popular Yaz and Yasmin contraceptives and are now getting more attention due to their link to these severe side effects. All four of the birth control options have one thing in common: they all contain a synthetic progestin called drospirenone.
Studies show that those who have used birth control options containing drospirenone actually double their side effect risk for developing blood clots in comparison to women who chose other birth control options that contain levonorgestrel. Blood clots are very serious and can lead to many side effects that are life-threatening. These severe blood clot side effects include the following:
- Deep vein thrombosis
- Pulmonary embolism
- Stroke
There have been other side effects linked to birth control options like Yaz, Yasmin, Gianvi and Ocella. These include both gallbladder disease and heart attacks.
There have been thousands of Yaz, Yasmin, Gianvi and Ocella lawsuits that have been filed by plaintiffs who all have similar claims of suffering from birth control related side effects. It has been reported that Bayer has settled many Yaz lawsuits and paid out millions to those who have filed those birth control lawsuits. Yet, there are many more that are still pending.
