J&J Halts Ethicon Gynecare Sales Amidst 1,400 Vaginal Mesh Injury Lawsuits
By Sarah Pierce
Johnson & Johnson’s Ethicon division announced plans to stop selling four types of vaginal mesh products used to treat urinary incontinence amidst more than 1,400 lawsuits filed by women who suffered injuries from the devices. Thousands of vaginal mesh lawsuits have been filed against Johnson & Johnson and Ethicon, prompting the company to request permission from the FDA to stop marketing the vaginal mesh devices: Gynecare Prolift, Gynecare Prolift+M, Gynecare TVT Secur and Gynecare Prosima.
The Gynecare vaginal mesh devices have been linked to serious injuries in women, including infections, pain, organ damage, internal injuries and other complications. Between 2005 and 2008, the FDA received 123 complaints about the Gynecare Prolift, which recent court documents revealed Ethicon continued to sell for nine months after the FDA ordered it to stop marketing the device. The president of the National Research for Women and Families commented on the Ethicon vaginal mesh recall by saying, “This is very good news for women because it takes several products off the market that have harmed a lot of women. [However], the bad news is that there are many other surgical meshes still on the market that are just as dangerous.”
Hundreds of vaginal mesh injury lawsuits have been also filed against other device makers, including Boston Scientific, C.R. Bard and Endo Health Solutions, Inc.
Ethicon Vaginal Mesh Recall “Not a Recall,” Johnson & Johnson Says
In announcing its move to stop selling the controversial Ethicon Gynecare vaginal mesh devices, Johnson & Johnson stressed that “this is not a recall; it’s a global discontinuation” based on the products’ commercial viability “in light of changing market dynamics, and is not related to safety or efficacy.”
Ethicon vaginal mesh lawyers found the PR announcement infuriating in light of all the serious vaginal mesh injuries linked to Ethicon’s Gynecare vaginal mesh devices. These complications include pain during sex; urinary problems; pelvic organ prolapse; vaginal scarring; perforated bladder, perforated bowl or perforated blood vessels; mesh erosion into the vagina; infection and organ injuries.
If you are experiencing any of these vaginal mesh side effects, you should see a doctor immediately for treatment. You should also contact a vaginal mesh lawyer to discuss your options for compensation for your medical expenses, pain and suffering. Thousands of women have stood up to vaginal mesh manufacturers, refusing to suffer in silence — and you should, too.
