Invokana-Side-EffectsA Florida woman is suing Janssen Pharmaceuticals alleging their diabetes medications caused her to suffer serious Invokana complications

Plaintiff Susan S. claims that after beginning treatment with Invokana in 2015 to treat her diabetes, she developed Invokana complications including diabetic ketoacidosis.

According to the Invokana lawsuit, Janssen failed to adequately warn consumers and the medical community about serious and dangerous Invokana complications and risks associated with taking the diabetes medicine, specifically the possibility of developing ketoacidosis.

Susan brings forth 13 claims against Janssen, including product liability, failure to warn, breach of express warranty, negligence.

She is seeking judgment for compensatory, economic and punitive damages and medical expenses for her pain and suffering alleged from Invokana complications.

About Invokana

Invokana is a sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitor that is recommended for patients with type 2 diabetes.

SGLT2 inhibitors are intended to help patients improve glycemic control and reduce blood glucose levels.

Specifically, Invokana stimulates the kidneys to remove excess sugar from the patient’s bloodstream.

However, Invokana along with other SGLT2 inhibitors, have been associated with an increased incidence of dangerous complications.

Frequently Reported Invokana Complications

The most commonly reported Invokana complications are diabetic ketoacidosis, kidney failure, and bone fractures, but some patients have reported that the diabetes drug has caused heart attacks and strokes.

Diabetic Ketoacidosis

Diabetic Ketoacidosis is one of the most commonly reported Invokana complications. This is a condition that can occur when acid builds up in the bloodstream. Diabetic ketoacidosis can lead to diabetic coma, and can even be fatal in severe cases. In patients taking Invokana, the disorder is presenting without observable levels of high blood sugar, making it more difficult to diagnose and increasingly dangerous.

Kidney Failure

A number Invokana lawsuits allege kidney failure or kidney damage due to Invokana complications. The kidneys perform a very important function in the body: filtering waste products from the blood. If kidney function is compromised, waste products will begin to accumulate in the bloodstream, putting the patient at risk for a number of dangerous conditions. Acute renal failure can lead to permanent kidney damage, which may require ongoing dialysis or an organ transplant. The condition can ultimately be fatal in some patients.

Bone Fractures

In September 2015, the FDA began requiring updated warning labels on SGLT2 inhibitor medications, including Invokana, to include information about the increased risk of bone fractures and reduced bone mineral density. Within 12 weeks of starting these diabetes medications, patients have experienced more than the expected number of hip and spine fractures, which can cause extended immobility and other complications.

Additionally, FDA adverse event reports relating to the use of Invokana have included severe dehydration, kidney stones, urinary tract infections, abnormal weight loss, and allergic reactions, including swelling of the lips, face, and throat.

Filing an Invokana Lawsuit

The most commonly reported Invokana complications are diabetic ketoacidosis and kidney failure, but lawsuits have also alleged that the drug has caused heart attacks and strokes.

If you or a loved one suffered serious Invokana side effects or side effects from another SGLT2 inhibitor drug, you may be owed substantial compensation for medical expenses and other damages.

The Invokana Complications Lawsuit is Case No. 3:16-cv-05682 in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey, Trenton Division.

In general, Invokana lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
