GranuFlo Side Effects Fatal for Fresenius Medical Care Patient

By John Curran

dialysis heart attackThe blood treated by kidney dialysis machines at Fresenius Medical Care centers goes directly to the heart. It is an unnerving image for families, but not heartbreaking like one Ohio woman’s story of watching her husband deal with GranuFlo heart attack side effects. Just minutes after treatment was stated, Charles Swigert had to be rushed to the hospital.

As his wife, Deborah, notes in her claim with her NaturaLyte lawsuit attorney, he didn’t come home alive that day. Unfortunately, it was not an isolated tragedy. The chemicals used by Fresenius Medical Care were known to have led to increased bicarbonate levels, which directly caused GranuFlo heart attack side effects by affecting the heart’s rhythm. Problematically, the link between acetic acids and heart attacks has been known for decades.

Considering that technicians at Fresenius Medical Care have to monitor other chemicals in the blood, it would be odd that they avoided doing the same thing for bicarbonates. Ms. Swigert and her husband were a year too late, regardless. Since they used the company’s centers, they would have been warned about the risks a year later in 2011, when the company issued a directive to avoid dialysis heart attacks side effects by using other chemicals than those found in its products GranuFlo and NaturaLyte. Other kidney dialysis patients wouldn’t find out until March 2012.

While the drug was pulled from the market in the summer of 2012, thousands of patients had these dangerous chemical buildups coursing through their body. Since many patients were weakened already by renal failure, it is entirely possible that grieving families were told that NaturaLyte and GranuFlo side effects were actually not a factor. Given the number of dialysis heart attack cases and the recall, that is highly unlikely, but Fresenius Medical Care is still fighting these lawsuits even as they face other investigations regarding their kidney dialysis centers.
