Gianvi/Yaz User Files Lawsuit over Alleged Birth Control Injuries

By Amanda Antell

Yaz Birth Control Injury LawsuitWisconsin plaintiff Danielle Cooling is suing Bayer Pharmaceuticals and Teva Pharmaceuticals for the injuries she allegedly sustained after using their birth control pills, Gianvi and Yaz.

Cooling began taking Yaz on July 30, 2008, and started taking Gianvi in June 2010. In September 2010, she suffered a pulmonary embolism and deep vein thrombosis. The plaintiff was rushed to the hospital, where she received emergency medical treatment for the conditions. According to her birth control lawsuit, at no point in time was the plaintiff aware of these possible Gianvi or Yaz side effects. Cooling alleges that the companies either knew or should have known about these side effects, and should have taken the time and effort to warn her.

Had Cooling known about these possible birth control side effects, she claims she would have not have taken either medication. She is suing Bayer and Teva for manufacturing and marketing a dangerous drug and failing to warn about the dangers associated with their products.

Overview of Gianvi/Yaz Complications

Gianvi was designed and developed by Bayer, and is marketed and distributed by Teva. Gianvi is composed of drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol. Unlike Yaz, which contains the main ingredient drospirenone, Gianvi only contains a small amount of the hormone. Because drospirenone is a newly-developed progestin, the data on it is still fairly limited. Bayer is currently the only company in the United States that manufactures products with drospirenone as the main component.

Yaz was approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) in 2006. Its cousin Yasmin was approved in 2001. Gianvi was approved in 2010. All three of these drugs contain drospirenone, which has led the companies to be targeted by a growing number of plaintiffs who claim that the ingredient causes significant birth control injuries. According to scientific studies, drospirenone acts as a diuretic and can slow blood flow. Decreased blood flow allows for the potential of blood clots to form, which could potentially lead to deep vein thrombosis, pulmonary embolism and other cardiac complications.

Cooling’s Yaz lawsuit has been added to ongoing multidistrict litigation (MDL) against Bayer. She is seeking compensation for her medical expenses, pain and suffering and punitive damages.

The Yaz MDL is In Re: Yasmin and Yaz (Drospirenone) Marketing, Sales Practices, and Relevant Products Liability Litigation, MDL No. 2100, in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
