Former Pro Soccer Player Fights to Overcome Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS)

By John Curran

Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuitStevens-Johnson Syndrome is a condition where a patient’s background and medical history doesn’t much matter. A former professional soccer player who played in Puerto Rico can attest to that after taking prescribed drugs and developing Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis (TENS). He received great treatment, but weeks after the diagnosis and treatment, he is still on heavy sedation as a result of the prescription drug-induced SJS and TENS.

U.S. soccer player Mark Oshiro Oehlman developed SJS and TENS after taking prescription medication and subsequently developed severe burns and blisters inside and outside his body, causing him to nearly die. Oehlman has endured several surgeries to treat his SJS/TENS burns and will continue to need hospitalization and physical therapy throughout his long recovery. Friends and family have raised tens of thousands of dollars for the young man, with radio DJs and even his former youth soccer team obtaining donations. All cite the severe pain and damage, both inside and outside the body caused by Stevens-Johnson Syndrome. As yet, there is no indication that the family has decided to consult with a Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuit attorney to hold the manufacturers of the medication that caused his SJS diagnosis responsible for his injuries.

It does go to show, however, that Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis and other prescription side effects can be debilitating for even the young, healthy and fit. It’s why there are Stevens-Johnson Syndrome class action lawsuits against a number of pharmaceutical manufacturers. The problem for many patients is the breadth of drugs known to cause Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis side effects.

If it were one class of medications, it would be easy for patients to stay informed, but drugs that can cause Stevens Johnson Syndrome and Toxic Epidermal Necrolysis vary greatly and can include mood stabilizers, anti-epileptic medications and extremely popular antibiotics. These Stevens Johnson Syndrome medications include Zithromax (azithromycin), Lamictal (Lamotrigine), Valproate (valproic acids), and more. Some of these are currently available as generics which can confuse some patients looking for toxic epidermal necrolysis warnings. In addition, others are used for off-label, nor non-approved usages, like Lamictal for depression.

Most people can’t afford to rely solely on the generosity of friends and family to pay for all of their medical bills. In addition, Stevens Johnson Syndrome requires therapy that can be costly and not be covered by health insurance. If you or someone you know has been affected by these prescription side effects, you have options.
