A growing number of patients across the country are choosing to file an Onglyza lawsuit after allegedly suffering from a number of serious side effects caused by the drug.
The FDA warning has recently been updated to include some of these risks, but patients claim that they were inadequately warned about the potential serious side effects of the type-2 diabetes medication, and were placed at significant risk.
Filing an Onglyza lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by side effects of Onglyza, but it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages that many patients face.
Background of Onglyza
Onglyza (also known by its generic name, saxagliptin) is a popular type-2 diabetes drug. Onglyza is manufactured pharmaceutical giants AstraZeneca and Bristol-Myers Squibb.
Onglyza is one of a group of relatively new drugs approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) just in 2009. Onglyza drugs and other incretin mimetics like it work to treat type-2 diabetes by helping to control a patient’s blood sugar level.
Just three years after its FDA approval and subsequent release onto the market, Onglyza was bringing in $709 million annually. Since then, its sales have continued to skyrocket. Within just a few more years, yearly sales of Onglyza are predicted to reach a whopping $2 billion.
These extreme sales numbers reflect the extreme popularity of the drug itself. Though it’s been available for less than a decade, it has already become one of the most popular diabetes drugs.
Onglyza is designed specifically for patients with type-2 diabetes—not type-1—and belongs to a group of similar medications known as incretin mimetics. These medications work by mimicking the natural incretin hormones of the body, stimulating the release of insulin.
A major draw of Onglyza has been that, unlike many other options, it does not encourage weight gain as a side effect. However, other side effects of Onglyza may be substantially more extreme and even life-threatening, leading some injured patients to file an Onglyza lawsuit.
Side Effects of Onglyza
Any medication will come with certain mild side effects, and Onglyza is no exception. Mild side effects of Onglyza include headaches, upper respiratory tract infection, and urinary tract infection. While mild side effects can cause problems, they generally go away on their own without further treatment, and aren’t too much of a cause for concern.
Unfortunately, patients taking Onglyza don’t just have to worry about mild side effects. The type-2 diabetes drug has also been linked with a number of more serious side effects, including pancreatic cancer, heart failure, and others.
Filing an Onglyza Lawsuit
Patients who file an Onglyza lawsuit often claim that Onglyza’s manufacturer failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the risks associated with the medication, including heart failure. An Onglyza FDA warning was added in February 2014 to inform patients about this serious risk.
If you or someone you love has suffered from Onglyza side effects like heart failure, pancreatitis, pancreatic cancer, or other serious problems, you may be able to file an Onglyza lawsuit.
Filing an Onglyza lawsuit may not fix the damage caused by this drug, or bring a loved one back to life, but it can help to alleviate medical expenses often incurred by these problems.
In general, Onglyza lawsuits and Kombiglyze XR lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
