FDA Warns about Dangerous Nizoral Side Effects

By Robert J. Boumis

Nizoral side effectsThe United States Food and Drug Administration has warned that Nizoral oral tablets may cause a number of serious, possibly life-threatening side effects. Users are warned to avoid taking Nizoral pills as a first line of defense against fungal infections due to the serious risk of liver injury or adrenal problems.

Nizoral oral tablets are a form of ketoconazole, a fungus-killing medication. The drug is intended to treat fungal infections like serious athlete’s foot, yeast infections/thrush, and ringworm, as well as other fungal diseases. While safer than other antifungal drugs, the FDA’s statement warned physicians not to consider this drug as a first-line response to fungal infections due to the risks they had uncovered.

In a Drug Safety Communication from last month, the FDA spelled out a number of serious medical conditions they have encountered in patients using Nizoral oral tablets. The drug is intended to kill parasitic fungus, but may be linked with serious complications for patients that took this drug.

Some of these potential Nizoral side effects include:

Liver Damage

Nizoral-caused liver damage has been reported. In some cases, the FDA has received reports of hepatotoxicity so severe the patients may die or require a liver transplant. The FDA warns physicians not to use this drug in patients with preexisting liver diseases. Additionally, the FDA recommends continuous monitoring for patients that used Nizoral tablets for liver function, as a way of spotting this potential complication.

Adrenal Insufficiency

Additionally, the FDA stated that Nizoral tablets may cause a decrease in the body’s production of corticosteroids, a condition called adrenal insufficiency. These hormones regulate many aspects of the human body, so adrenal insufficiency can cause symptoms including weight loss, hypoglycemia, dehydration, nausea, vomiting, and muscle aches. These symptoms can mimic Cushing’s Syndrome, a “naturally”-occurring adrenal insufficiency that has many of the same symptoms.

Nizoral Drug Interactions

The FDA has also warned that Nizoral tablets may interact with other drugs and cause serious reactions. This includes abnormal heart rhythms or arrhythmia. Arrhythmias can lead to further heart issues, including death under some circumstances. The FDA’s statement did not indicate which drugs may cause such interactions.

An investigation has been launched to explore the possibility of a class action lawsuit against the manufacturers of Nizoral tablets. Such a lawsuit could allege that the manufacturers of Nizoral tablets knew – or reasonably should have known – about the serious health risks associated with their product, based on resources like postmarket surveillance, clinical trials, or published studies.

A Nizoral lawsuit could further allege that the manufacturers — despite making a potentially dangerous product — continued to manufacture, market and distribute Nizoral tablets, endangering lives through negligence and fraud.
