FDA Refuses to Follow European Yasmin/Yaz Recalls

By John Curran

Yaz Yasmin blood clotsIf you lived in France, Yasmin blood clot side effects would be limited because their equivalent of the Food and Drug Administration has recalled fourth-generation birth control options for blood clotting issues. Anyone who has followed the U.S. agency and its actions regarding dangerous drugs and medical devices knows that won’t occur here.

In fact, Bayer Pharmaceutical has already received approval for a new birth control pill that allegedly does not carry the same risk for Yaz side effects, although the company said the same thing about oral contraceptives now the subject of more than 10,000 lawsuits. However, the increased risks compared to older options led the National Drugs Safety Agency to call for prescriptions only when women cannot tolerate other contraceptive options.
The FDA has forced Bayer to publicize Yasmin blood clot side effects in marketing materials, even though the issues have been known for years and the changes to websites were only required recently. In fact, it is interesting that while Bayer’s drug has gone off patent, necessitating the new prescription medication, the FDA has never considered pulling the other drugs from the market in spite of Ocella pulmonary embolism risks.

Women who are considering their contraceptive options may be better served by following developments in other countries, ironically. Medical safety agencies in Western Europe seem to do a better job monitoring dangerous drugs and warning doctors to restrict their usage if not outright banning them. In fact, the French are now investigating a related drug, Dianette, which has been linked to problems similar to Ocella pulmonary embolism risks.

As the new Skyla IUD hits the market, Bayer will try to promote it since they will make more money than generic birth control options. Women who want to control when they will start a family should watch for news reports coming out of France, the United Kingdom and even Germany. Yasmin lawsuit attorneys say those countries will likely publish side effect reports before the FDA does.

Unfortunately, many were not aware of these problems for prior drugs. In that case, legal recourse is available, and as Bayer is settling many cases, it could be rapid.
