FDA Issues Warning for Dangerous Nizoral Side Effects
By Amanda Antell

Liver injuries caused by Nizoral tablets can be severe enough to require a liver transplant, and can potentially lead to death. The FDA has revised Nizoral’s warning label, stating that people who have a pre-existing liver condition should be highly cautious and consider a different medication. The warning also includes new recommendations for assessing and monitoring patients for liver toxicity. In the United States, these severe liver cases account for over 50% of all acute liver failures or 1,000 cases each year.
It has also been found that if Nizoral is taken in combination with the following drugs, other complications may follow. These drugs include but are not limited to:
- Dofetilide
- Quinidine
- Pimozide
- Cisapride
Nizoral side effects that have been reported from these drug interactions include, but are not limited to QT prolongation (irregular heartbeats that can be life threatening) and damage to the kidneys’ adrenal glands.
Nizoral (ketoconazole) is an oral medication used for treating fungal infections of the skin and nails. Nizoral works by inhibiting a particular enzyme that is key for the fungal cell membrane to reproduce. This weakens the structure of the cell and destroys the fungus. Nizoral oral tablets are typically prescribed to treat athlete’s foot, ringworm, yeast infection, jock itch, and tinea versicolor. Nizoral can also be used to treat dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis on other areas of the body.
Other than the possible injuries listed above, Nizoral side effects may include:
- Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting, or abdominal discomfort
- Fever, feeling unwell, or unusual tiredness
- Yellowing of the skin or the whites of the eyes
- Darkening of the urine or lightening of the stools
- Pain or discomfort in the right upper abdomen
According to the FDA, there were over 5.2 million Nizoral prescription orders in 2012 alone, with over 12% (609,000) of them being in tablet form. Currently, Nizoral users from across the country are suing Johnson & Johnson for not adequately warning about Nizoral side effects. Allegedly, the company made no effort to contact their patients or their physicians about these possible complications.
Plaintiffs in Nizoral lawsuits are alleging concealment of information, false advertising, and negligence. Patients who are experiencing any possible abnormalities after taking this drug should talk to their doctor immediately.
