A California man recently filed an Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit against pharmaceutical company Bristol-Myers Squibb.

The plaintiff, Fred S., claims in the Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit that he was prescribed Eliquis by his doctor for the treatment of blood clots.

However, the lawsuit alleges, Eliquis caused some very serious side effects, some of which are irreversible.

According to the lawsuit, the plaintiff suffered side effects that not only caused physical harm, but also resulted in financial and emotional injuries.

The Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including but not limited to defective design, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraudulent concealment and others.

Background of Eliquis

Eliquis (also known by its generic name, apixaban) is a popular blood thinner medication manufactured and distributed by Bristol-Myers Squibb.

Eliquis is one of several in a new class of blood thinners known as Factor Xa Inhibitors. Since being introduced to the market, Factor Xa Inhibitors have steadily moved to replace the traditional blood thinner, warfarin.

But despite the growing popularity of Eliquis and others in its class, there are actually a growing number of injured patients reporting severe—possibly even fatal—side effects.

Eliquis Bleeding Side Effects

Like with any drug, Eliquis comes with a number of side effects. For most people, these side effects tend to be mild and go away on their own without further treatment.

These side effects include nausea, easy bruising, and minor bleeding, and do not provide any cause for concern, as they are no more serious than the minor, expected side effects of any other drug.

For others, however, Eliquis side effects can develop into an extreme or even life-threatening bleeding problem.

While bleeding side effects are common in blood thinners, since these drugs work to stop blood clots from forming, in some cases, these effects can lead to major consequences.

However, in certain extreme situations, the ability to effectively form blood clots may be the body’s only defense against excessive bleeding. In these cases, including car accidents and emergency surgeries, a person taking a blood thinner like Eliquis could be unable to form these life-saving blood clots.

Pharmaceutical companies are aware of this problem, so most blood thinners have antidotes to reverse these effects. However, Eliquis does not yet have such an antidote.

Though serious bleeding problems are to be expected of any blood thinner, most of these drugs have antidotes to counteract the drug in emergencies and allow the blood to once again clot, forming life-saving clots.

Filing an Eliquis Bleeding Side Effects Lawsuit

A number of injured patients, like Fred S., are choosing to file an Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit, alleging that Bristol-Myers Squibb knew about these Eliquis bleeding problems and yet failed to warn the public and the medical community about these risks.

Lawsuits allege that Bristol-Myers Squibb not only failed to warn about the risks, but even actively misled the public about the safety and efficacy of Eliquis.

Though filing an Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit cannot undo the damage of serious Eliquis bleeding problems or bring a loved one back to life, it may be able to help compensate for financial expenses incurred by medical bills or lost wages.

If you or someone you know has taken Eliquis or a similar medication and has since suffered from major Eliquis bleeding problems, you may be able to file an Eliquis bleeding side effects lawsuit.

The Eliquis Bleeding Side Effects Lawsuit is Case No. 1:16-cv-06556 in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York.
