The diabetes drug Invokamet is a popular option for patients with type-2 diabetes. Unfortunately, it has been linked with some serious and even life-altering complications, including a serious flesh-eating infection of the genitals known as necrotizing fasciitis or Fournier’s gangrene.
If you or a loved one have suffered from side effects of Invokamet, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
Basics of Invokamet
Invokamet (a combination of canagliflozin and metformin hydrochloride) is a type-2 diabetes medication manufactured by Janssen Pharmaceuticals. Janssen also sells Invokana (canagliflozin) and Invokamet XR, an extended release version of Invokamet. These belong to a group of medications known as sodium-glucose cotransporter-2 (SGLT2) inhibitors.
In patients with type-2 diabetes, the blood develops much higher levels of glucose (sugar) than normal, a condition known as hyperglycemia. This is because of a failure to properly use insulin, which normally regulates blood sugar levels. In order to treat type-2 diabetes, Invokamet and other canagliflozin medications work to lower the patient’s blood sugar.
Invokamet Side Effects
Of course, any medication comes with the risk of certain side effects, and Invokamet is no different. Common side effects of Invokamet include diarrhea, gas, head pain, urinary tract infection, weight loss, low blood sugar, and more. These side effects are well known, and patients are warned about them prior to taking them. However, Invokamet users may not have been adequately warned about more serious risks until recently.
Indeed, the use of Invokamet has also been linked with a number of major side effects, including a serious disease known as necrotizing fasciitis, also known as Fournier’s gangrene.
The FDA released a warning about that the risk of necrotizing fasciitis of the perineum, also known as Fournier’s gangrene, is associated with the use of drugs in the same class as Invokamet in August 2018. According to the FDA warning, SGLT2 inhibitors like Invokamet may increase the risk of this serious and rare infection.
Gangrene occurs when body tissue is dead or dying (necrosis) due to lack of blood flow or a bacterial infection. Fournier’s gangrene specifically involves infection of the genital area, but the dying tissue can stretch all the way to the thighs, stomach, and even chest.
From March 2013 to May 2018, the FDA identified 12 cases of patients taking an SGLT2 inhibitor developing necrotizing fasciitis.
Filing an Invokamet Lawsuit
A growing number of canagliflozin users are turning to litigation, alleging that they were not adequately warned of the serious side effects associated with these drugs.
If you or someone you love has suffered from side effects of Invokamet like necrotizing fasciitis, you may be able to file a lawsuit. Of course, filing a lawsuit cannot undo the pain and suffering caused by these or other major Invokamet side effects, but it can at least help to alleviate the financial burden incurred by medical expenses and lost wages.
