As with all medications, Invokana has been associated with serious side effects. The drug’s manufacturer says the most common side effects reported with Invokana include yeast infections and changes in urination.
However, a growing number of diabetes patients, especially men, have been diagnosed with Fournier’s gangrene, which is a flesh eating infection of the genitals. This is a rare but serious medical condition.
This medical condition requires immediate medical attention. If the infection spreads, it could cause serious problems. Given that the news over this possible infection is relatively recent, many users of these medicines say they were not given enough warning to be able to spot the side effects.
What Is Fournier’s Gangrene?
Gangrene occurs when body tissue is dying or is dead due to a bacterial infection or a lack of blood flow. Specifically, Fournier’s gangrene involves perineum or nearby tissue of the genitals becoming infected.
WebMD reports that women and children can get Fournier’s gangrene despite the fact that it is more common in men. Men between the ages of 50 and 60 are most likely to develop Fournier’s gangrene and men are 10 times as likely as women to be diagnosed with this condition.
Fournier’s gangrene might also be referred to as Fournier disease or Fournier’s disease.
Symptoms of Fournier’s Gangrene
A growing number of Invokana and other related diabetes drugs’ patients have been diagnosed with Fournier’s gangrene. According to rarediseases.org, the symptoms of this serious medical condition include moderate to severe pain as well as swelling in the genital areas followed by smell noticed around the affected tissue, general discomfort, and full blown gangrene.
How is Fournier’s Gangrene Diagnosed?
Clinical findings are usually used to arrive at a Fournier’s gangrene diagnosis. Ultrasound evaluation may determine the difference between acute inflammatory issues and Fournier’s gangrene. Computed tomography can help to identify the portal of entry for the process, and X-ray studies can identify the location and extent of distribution of gas in the wounds.
Any patient who develops the early signs of Fournier’s gangrene is encouraged to communicate with their physician as soon as possible to develop a treatment plan.
Some of the patients who are at risk of developing this diabetes drug flesh eating infection argue that the makers of Invokana knew about these risks and failed to properly disclose them to the medical community or to the public at large.
While the possibility of developing these side effects is relatively low, a person who does not get immediate medical attention for his or her injuries could develop additional problems.
Patients already using these drugs should be mindful of the possible side effects and problems that could indicate complications such as Fournier’s gangrene. Any changes in a patient’s underlying condition while taking diabetes drugs should be noted and lead that person to contact their prescribing physician right away.
It can be dangerous to stop drugs without warning. Talking to a doctor first identifies the right treatment plan and could help to identify a diagnosis of Fournier’s gangrene.
