According to a recent FDA communication, Synjardy side effects and those of other diabetes drugs could include a damaging infection of the flesh around the genitals.
Synjardy and its extended release version is just one of several SGLT2 inhibitors which encourage the kidneys to release extra glucose through urine output that may exist in the blood.
According to a September 2018 Forbes article, Synjardy side effects could include similar risks to those of these other SGLT2 inhibitors:
- Invokana
- Invokamet/Invokamet XR
- Farxiga
- Xigduo XR
- Qtern
- Jardiance
- Glyxambi
- Steglatro
- Segluromet
- Steglujan
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reports that this blood-sugar lowering drug class is widely popular among physicians with 1.7 million people placed on a drug regimen including one of the listed medications last year alone.
By lowering the burden of glucose in the body’s circulation, drugs in this class allegedly lower the patient’s chances of having a heart attack or stroke or developing cardiovascular diseases. These are secondary but deadly outgrowths of the diabetic condition.
But these drugs may lead to some highly undesirable complications. The higher levels of sugar in patients’ urine can lead to rare but terrifying Synjardy side effects in the form of flesh-eating bacteria. According to the Forbes article, the higher levels of sugar offer a breeding ground for opportunistic bacteria and organisms.
Sometimes the side effects lead to simple invasions such as yeast and urinary tract infections. Typically, these are more common in females in general, but the incidence of occurrence in men taking an SGLT2 inhibitor would be greater.
Far more serious Synjardy side effects could include with Clostridium perfringens, Group A Streptococcus, Staphylococcus aureus, and Vibrio vulnificus. These invaders are attributed to a rare condition known as Fournier’s gangrene.
Fournier’s gangrene can happen to women, but it tends to be diagnosed in men more often. This flesh-eating infection which can enter tissue through any kind of skin break under or around the genitals or perineum can rapidly progress without timely and effective antibiotic treatment.
The infection can destroy the genital area and bring on the patient’s early demise by becoming systemic. Treatment includes the rapid removal of affected tissue to halt this transmission as well as antibiotic administration.
While the FDA reports only one death from Fournier’s gangrene among those on SGLT2 inhibitors, they also indicate that there have been a dozen hospitalized for the condition. The single death was from among this affected dozen counted from the spring of 2013 to the spring of 2018.
This group became infected within just a few weeks or months of starting one of the SGLT2 inhibitor drugs. This higher rate of incidence doesn’t seem to occur with other type-2 diabetes medications not of this class.
Symptoms of redness, inflammation, urinary frequency, or other genitally-related pain or discomfort should get prompt medical attention. It can be embarrassing or even humiliating to seek out a doctor’s treatment, but the consequences of failing to do so could be horrendous.
