CVS Ear Pain Relief: Homeopathic Scam or Effective Treatment Option?
By Andrea Gressman

According to the advertisement of CVS Homeopathic Ear Pain Relief, the homeopathic product provides “Temporary relief from symptoms of ear ache due to: draft, colds, influenza, swimmer’s ear.” It goes on to say, “This homeopathic formula utilizes three natural products that stimulate the human body’s ability to ease ear pain. Homeopathic medication works effectively without adverse reactions or drug interactions so you can use this product for all ages with confidence.”
It lists the three active ingredients as follows:
- Chamomilla – this is a plant-based product that evidently is used when a person’s ears feeling clogged.
- Mercurius Solubilis (also known as quick silver or Mercurius Vivus) – this product supposedly addresses the inflammation and pain of the inner ear.
- Sulphur – this is a mineral that represents about 0.25% of the human body weight. However, it is not considered allergenic and beyond that it was not specified exactly what benefit this particular ingredient supposedly has in regards to helping with ear issues.
The advertisement goes onto claim that these combined elements are used to treat itching, pain and ringing of the ear. But that is where the issue lies. It is believed that these homeopathic products are so diluted in the active ingredients they provide that they are nothing more than a placebo. As a result, many homeopathic scam lawsuits and homeopathic fraud class action lawsuits have been filed across the nation in order to receive compensation for what is considered to be deceptive advertising.
What Classifies as Homeopathic Fraud?
Homeopathic medicine has grown in popularity for a number of reasons. First, people are pursuing a healthy lifestyle and homeopathic products have been advertised as a healthier option. The idea of homeopathic medicine is that the body will heal itself if given the right support. Although some of the ingredients do have a history of being used for medicinal purposes in an effective way, it becomes a homeopathic scam when the homeopathic product manufacturer dilutes the specified ingredients to the point where they have absolutely no effect and do not deliver the promised results that have been advertised. It also becomes homeopathic fraud when the manufacturer grossly exaggerates the benefits of the homeopathic products as well.
