Certain Birth Control Pills Linked to Blood Clot Risks

By Anne Bucher

Yasmin, Yaz blood clot lawsuitsDrospirenone is a synthetic hormone that is used in some types of birth control pills. Drospirenone is sold under the brand names Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella. It has been approved by the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) to treat premenstrual dysphoric disorder and moderate acne. These birth control pills have been marketed as a miracle pill that improves the moods and physical symptoms associated with menstruation.

Women Suffered Serious Yaz Side Effects

Despite the drug’s popularity, many women have complained that they have suffered significant Yaz injuries, including:

  • Blood clots
  • Deep vein thrombosis
  • Gallbladder problems
  • Pulmonary embolism
  • Stroke
  • Heart attack

Some of these Yaz injuries have been fatal. If you have suffered serious health complications after using Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella, contact a Yaz attorney immediately. You could be entitled to compensation from Bayer.

FDA Cracks Down on Misleading Yaz Marketing

Because of Bayer’s aggressive direct-to-consumer marketing tactics, Yaz quickly became the top-selling contraceptive pill in the U.S. In these deceptive marketing tactics, Bayer claimed that its contraceptive pills Yaz and Yasmin were effective at treating acne and premenstrual syndrome (PMS). Bayer also downplayed the potential health risks posed by the products.

In 2009, the FDA cracked down on drug companies that used deceptive direct-to-consumer marketing tactics to sell products. According to the FDA, there was no evidence that Yaz or Yasmin was effective for treating acne or PMS. These advertisements violated federal laws that prohibit companies from promoting unapproved uses for a drug.

In a settlement agreement with the FDA and attorneys general in 27 states, Bayer agreed to spend $20 million on corrective ads. They were also required to submit all of the Yaz ads to the FDA for screening for six years. This punishment is highly unusual for the FDA, which usually requires drug companies to revise their existing advertisements to accurately reflect the product’s benefits and risks.

It is highly unusual for federal agencies to require companies to issue corrective advertising. Because the misleading ads contributed to Yaz’s widespread popularity, the FDA believed that it was important for Bayer to correct the misleading advertisements by releasing direct-to-consumer advertisements that clarified the drug’s approved uses.

You Could Be Entitled to Compensation for Your Yaz Injuries

Thousands of women who have used Yaz or Yasmin have complained of serious Yaz side effects. Bayer has already agreed to set aside $1.5 billion to settle thousands of Yaz lawsuits. There are currently more than 9,000 lawsuits involved in Yaz multidistrict litigation (MDL) that is currently pending in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Illinois.
