Woman undergoing chemotherapyA diagnosis of CML or chronic myeloid leukemia requires prompt intervention by medical professionals. One method of addressing this cancer is Tasigna CML treatment.

Tasigna CML treatment is frequently recommended for this type of cancer, despite the fact that patient complaints and studies have connected the use of Tasigna with the development of atherosclerosis.

Tasigna may be recommended by a physician after it is confirmed that the patient does have CML. A variety of treatment options are available, however.

Types of CML Treatment

Doctors often work together to develop a comprehensive treatment plan for a patient who has been diagnosed with cancer. Cancer treatment options include immunotherapy, chemotherapy, and targeted therapy. A person can receive these treatments either individually or as a combination.

Depending on how the condition was diagnosed, a patient could develop a treatment plan with a surgical oncologist, hematologist, or radiation oncologist.

Treatments of Chronic Myeloid Leukemia by Phase

Whether or not the Tasigna CML treatment is selected by doctors also has to with the person’s current phase of CML. According to the American Cancer Society, the three primary phases of CML include accelerated, blast, or chronic phase.

Other factors that doctors consider in electing whether or not to use the Tasigna CML treatment include the availability of a stem cell donor who has a matching tissue type and the age of the patient. Tasigna is often recommended for those patients who have chronic phase CML.

In the event that the cancer is responding well to the selected treatment within 90 days after beginning this treatment course, the patient should have a reduction of the copies of the problematic gene or some type of cytogenic or hematologic response.

What Is Chronic Myeloid Leukemia?

According to the Leukaemia Foundation of Australia, CML is a form of cancer that affects bone marrow and blood. The bone marrow for a patient who has been diagnosed with CML produces too many white cells. These cells then crowd out the patient’s bone marrow, interfering with the typical production of normal blood cells.

When these blood cells spill out of the bone marrow and into the blood stream, they are not fully developed and are unable to properly fight infections. CML diagnosis are usually made in the early chronic phase of the cancer.

In fact, according to the Foundation, more than 90 percent of individuals are diagnosed in this phase. The proportion of blast cells in the blood and bone marrow is at 5 percent or less and many people are generally well from the health perspective at this stage and have few symptoms of the disease.

Risks of Tasigna Treatment

Although the Tasigna treatment is one of the most popular ways to treat CML, it does come with risks, such as the development of atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is the leading cause of morbidity and death in developed countries and is the primary cause behind coronary artery disease.

Any patients who have already been diagnosed with atherosclerosis after taking Tasigna may consult with an experienced attorney about filing a lawsuit.

In general, Tasigna lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
