Pradaxa, also known as dabigatran, is a popular anticoagulant manufactured and sold by Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.
Unfortunately, a growing number of reports have alleged that drugs like Pradaxa cause a cerebral hemorrhage in some patients.
Pradaxa Background
Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals created Pradaxa as a replacement for warfarin, the longtime traditional blood thinner, or anticoagulant.
Pradaxa was first approved as a blood thinner in 2010. However, since its introduction to the market, Pradaxa has been the target of thousands of lawsuits alleging that taking drugs like Pradaxa cause a cerebral hemorrhage for some patients.
The number of lawsuits, as well as several studies, suggest that the risk that Pradaxa may cause a cerebral hemorrhage is more significant than patients originally thought.
This is a risk that may affect a large number of people, since millions of U.S. patients have switched to Pradaxa since its approval only a few years ago.
Cerebral hemorrhaging, or bleeding in the brain, is the most dangerous side effect of Pradaxa. Since drugs like Pradaxa cause a cerebral hemorrhage in some patients, it is important to know the symptoms of a brain bleed to seek medical attention immediately.
Pradaxa Cerebral Hemorrhaging
Because of the nature of blood thinner drugs like Pradaxa, these drugs often cause excessive and unusual bruising and bleeding.
This is due to the fact that when a person takes a blood thinner to avoid dangerous clotting, their body is also unable to form blood clots to prevent this kind of unusual bleeding.
For most, bruising and bleeding side effects are extremely minor. For others, however, Pradaxa may cause a cerebral hemorrhage, which in some cases is fatal, but otherwise can still have severe, life-altering consequences.
Symptoms of Cerebral Hemorrhaging
Some symptoms of cerebral hemorrhaging include:
- A sudden severe headache
- Seizures with no previous history of seizures
- Weakness in an arm or leg
- Nausea or vomiting
- Decreased alertness, lethargy
- Changes in vision
- Tingling or numbness
- Difficulty speaking or understanding speech
- Difficulty swallowing
- Difficulty reading or writing
- Loss of fine motor skills (including hand tremors)
- Loss of coordination
- Loss of balance
- An abnormal sense of taste
- Loss of consciousness
Pradaxa Lawsuits
Many people and families who have suffered from Pradaxa side effects, including cerebral hemorrhaging, have filed lawsuits against Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals.
Through these lawsuits, patients and their families often hope to gain some kind of compensation for their pain and suffering. These lawsuits claim that the manufacturer failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community that Pradaxa can cause cerebral hemorrhaging.
If you or someone you love has taken Pradaxa and has subsequently experienced any of the above symptoms, such as excessive bleeding or brain hemorrhaging due to Pradaxa, you may have cause for filing a Pradaxa bleeding side effects lawsuit.
In general, Pradaxa lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
