Burn Unit Doctor Describes Stevens Johnson Syndrome

By John Curran

Stevens Johnson Syndrome lawsuitWhile skin disorders like psoriasis do not generally resemble severe burns, Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects from many drugs can. It is why Dr. Linwood Haith often treats people with the condition at a burn center near Lancaster, Pennsylvania. He says that he sees a few SJS patients a month.

The severe inflammation of the skin and mucus membranes can be dangerous, especially if the condition progresses to toxic epidermal necrolysis, where the rash turns skin black and sections die off. Unfortunately, Haith notes that antibiotics penicillin and anticonvulsants like Dilantin are linked to Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects, but nearly any drug can cause these problems.

The doctor notes that he has seen some success in using steroids to minimize the progression of the related conditions, but in general the only treatment for Stevens Johnson Syndrome side effects is to offer pain management and take care of any wounds. Some even have to be put into a medically-induced coma for a few weeks because of the severe pain.

Dr. Haith is well aware of the risks involved with the conditions, but not all doctors are. As it is an allergic reaction, patients who are taking a medication should be wary of the symptoms of Stevens Johnson Syndrome, which can start as a rash and can also include fever and malaise, similar to flu symptoms.  Keep in mind that depending on overall health, SJS side effects can lead to blindness and flare-ups are possible even if patients never again use the medication that caused the initial problems.

While burn center doctors have experience with this, family members usually do not and that can make a Stevens Johnson Syndrome diagnosis extremely frightening. Anyone with similar symptoms should be wary of a diagnosis of another condition, as any delays in treatment could lead to significant problems in mucus membranes like the eyes and throat.
