Blood sugar test.Yet another plaintiff has joined the growing litigation against Janssen Pharmaceuticals over the popular Invokana medicine, which has been linked with some serious complications.

The plaintiff, Troy R., an Oklahoma resident, alleges in his lawsuit that he began taking Invokana at the direction of his doctor in March 2014, and continued this use for about two years, until March 2016. The Invokana medicine was used for its primary purpose, which is to treat diabetes.

According to Troy, he began experiencing serious side effects sometime after using Invokana, eventually leading to severe and even permanent complications. The lawsuit claims that Troy suffered kidney failure, amputations, myocardial infarction, and diabetic ketoacidosis as a direct result of taking the drug Invokana.

In his lawsuit, Troy claims that Janssen either knew or should have known that its Invokana medicine had the potential to cause these injuries, and had a responsibility to warn patients and the medical community about this risk, yet failed to do so.

Troy filed his Invokana medicine lawsuit on Oct. 30 in the U.S District Court for the District of New Jersey. The lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including manufacturing defect, defective design, failure to warn, breach of express and implied warranties, negligence, fraudulent misrepresentation, and fraud, among several others.

This complaint joins many other lawsuits filed over Invokana medicine complications to be consolidated into an MDL, or multidistrict litigation.

Background of Invokana Medicine

Invokana (also known by its generic name, canagliflozin) was first introduced to the drug market in 2013 to treat diabetes. Janssen, a prominent subsidiary of pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson, is the popular drug’s manufacturer.

Invokana medicine is one of several major diabetes drugs known as sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors. SGLT2 inhibitors like Invokana are becoming increasingly popular, as they work with your kidneys to help you lose sugar through the process of urination. This method, it appears, impacts the kidneys.

Despite the growing use of new diabetes drugs like Invokana, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has received a slew of adverse event reports regarding Invokana complications, and has recently required that Janssen add a series of warnings to the Invokana medicine label about these risks.

Invokana Side Effects

Invokana medicine and other diabetes drugs have been connected with a number of dangerous complications, from heart attack to kidney failure to diabetic ketoacidosis.

The popular diabetes drug is associated with a number of Invokana complications, including, but not limited to:

  • Dehydration (dizziness, lightheadedness)
  • Vaginal yeast infection
  • Yeast infection of the penis
  • Low blood sugar
  • Serious allergic reaction
  • Ketoacidosis
  • Kidney failure

Filing a Lawsuit Over Side Effects of Invokana Medicine

Invokana medicine lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to adequately warn about these Invokana complications and their potential severity.

If you or someone you love has suffered due to severe Invokana side effects like kidney injury, you may be able to file a lawsuit. While filing a lawsuit cannot reverse the side effects of Invokana, pursuing a lawsuit can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.

The Invokana Medicine Lawsuit is Case No. 3:17-cv-10000-BRM-LHG, in the U.S. District Court for the District of New Jersey.

In general, Invokana and Invokamet lawsuits are filed individually by each plaintiff and are not class actions.
