Xarelto may be one of the most popular anticoagulants, but critics say the risks of Xarelto may outweigh its benefits. Risks of Xarelto include excessive bleeding that may in some cases be life-threatening.
Xarelto Basics
Xarelto (also known by its generic name, rivaroxaban) is one of several new, popular anticoagulants that have taken over for warfarin, the longstanding staple blood thinner. While warfarin required frequent blood monitoring of its users, Xarelto and other new drugs like Pradaxa and Eliquis do not require such monitoring.
Many anticoagulant users see this as a convenience worth the extra money. However, reports indicate that there may be risks of Xarelto that make the drug more dangerous than it is worth.
Xarelto is manufactured by Janssen, a prominent subsidiary of the pharmaceutical giant Johnson & Johnson. Xarelto was approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration in July 2011.
Xarelto is prescribed for the treatment of blood clots and conditions related to this kind of clotting. Blood clots can be very dangerous, and in some cases can be fatal, so blood thinners are a fairly common medication.
Xarelto has gained in popularity since its release onto the market in 2011. However, this widely used anticoagulant carries with it significant risks.
Risks of Xarelto
As with any medication, there are certain risks of Xarelto. Most side effects of Xarelto are mild and go away on their own without further treatment, but some can be quite serious.
Some Xarelto users may experience extremely severe and dangerous bleeding issues that cannot be controlled or reversed, given that there is no antidote available to counteract Xarelto’s effects.
Of course, any anticoagulant user is at risk of bleeding side effects, since these medications are meant to stop the blood clotting process that can help in a bleeding emergency. However, while anticoagulants like warfarin have an antidote to reverse their effects, Xarelto has no such antidote.
Unfortunately, these risks of Xarelto may affect a great number of patients since, according to Janssen, over seven million patients across the globe have been prescribed Xarelto.
Xarelto Bleeding Lawsuits
Janssen Pharmaceuticals is currently facing hundreds of Xarelto bleeding lawsuits. These patients may have experienced gastrointestinal bleeding, hemorrhaging or other risks of Xarelto.
These Xarelto lawsuits claim that the drug makers failed to be completely transparent in the warnings for their product about these serious risks of Xarelto, as well as the complications involved in the treatment for internal bleeding.
However, some claim that Janssen’s marketing of Xarelto actually misinformed patients and the medical community about the safety and efficacy of the drug.
If you or someone you love has suffered from risks of Xarelto like excessive bleeding, you may be able to join a Xarelto bleeding lawsuit. Filing a Xarelto lawsuit cannot take away the pain and suffering caused by Xarelto, but it can help to alleviate the financial burden caused by medical expenses and lost wages.
