5 Women Sue Bayer Over Yasmin/Yaz Side Effects

By Jessica Tyner

Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella birth control pillsIn March 2013, five women rallied together to join the legion of Yaz/Yasmin lawsuits against Bayer Pharmaceuticals. All five women suffered serious side effects from Yaz, Yasmin and the generic versions Beyaz and Ocella. They say that Bayer did not provide proper warnings of Yaz side effects that resulted in loss of income, ongoing emotional suffering, and the inability to earn money while experiencing the side effects.

Yaz and Yasmin, along with the generic versions Beyaz and Ocella, are extremely popular forms of oral contraception for women. In fact, oral contraception is the most common form of birth control with 28 percent of American contraceptive users choosing it as their method of choice. According to this latest lawsuit, Bayer is being charged with fraud, negligence, failure to warn patients about the risks, deceit and manufacturing defects. While this lawsuit was filed in California, the five women live around the United States and suffered similar side effects after taking the birth control pills.

Dangerous Yaz Side Effects

Plaintiff Roxanne Campbell of Florida suffered from venous thrombosis which called for ongoing monitoring and treatment after taking the pill. Plaintiffs Marla Hoffman from Ohio, Gabrielle Dean from Colorado, Suzanne Landry-Harmon from Florida and Dawn Meadows from Indiana experienced Yaz deep vein thrombosis (DVT). Each of these women also experienced additional Yaz side effects that required treatment and care.

According to the women, the chemical makeup of the current generation of Yaz/Yasmin and the generic versions are different than previous generations. Allegedly, the progestin drospirenone works differently and has a higher risk of causing hyperkalemia. Hyperkalemia, or high levels of potassium in the bloodstream, can lead to problems with the heart, gallbladder and kidneys.

The Risk of Deep Vein Thrombosis with Yaz/Yasmin

A number of studies indicate that Deep Vein Thrombosis (DVT) is a high risk for women taking Yaz/Yasmin, Beyaz or Ocella birth control. All five of the women suffered from DVT symptoms, and sadly their experience isn’t an anomaly. DVT happens when a blood clot is created and gets stuck in a deep vein of the body, usually in the leg or pelvis. When the blood clot becomes dislodged, it can travel to other areas of the body and result in a heart attack, stroke or ultimately death.

The risk of DVT turning lethal increases when a person is in an elevated position, such as taking a flight. Unfortunately, DVT isn’t immediately noticeable, even by the individual. Since birth control pills like Yaz, Yasmin, Beyaz and Ocella are taken daily and for many years, there’s no telling when DVT might develop — and the risks are exacerbated for frequent fliers or those on a long-haul flight.

Have You Taken Yaz, Yasmin, Ocella or Beyaz?

According to the British Medical Journal, a woman who takes Yaz/Yasmin or the generic versions are twice as likely to experience blood clots compared to women who take older versions or different contraceptive pills. If you currently take Yaz or have in the past and have experienced negative side effects, you might have a Yaz/Yasmin legal claim.

Many people don’t immediately realize that their birth control pills — something they may have been taking for years — might be the cause of a serious health issue.
