A Kansas resident recently filed a Nexium wrongful death lawsuit against AstraZeneca after his father died, alleging PPI drugs led to his death.
According to the Nexium wrongful death lawsuit, the plaintiff’s late father, Frank R., took protein pump inhibitor (PPI) drugs at the direction of his doctor between 2006 and 2014, eventually resulting in his death from complications on October 30, 2014.
This Nexium wrongful death lawsuit, and others like it alleging injuries and deaths, claim that the drug’s manufacturer, AstraZeneca, either knew or should have known about the serious risks linked with its drug, and therefore had a duty to properly warn both the public and the medical community about these risks.
The Nexium wrongful death lawsuit was filed on multiple counts, including strict liability, failure to warn, negligence, breach of express and implied warranties, fraud, negligent misrepresentation, and fraudulent concealment.
Background of Nexium
Nexium is a popular heartburn medication manufactured and distributed by AstraZeneca Pharmaceuticals. Nexium has been linked with a number of serious side effects, including Nexium kidney injuries and, in some cases, wrongful death.
Nexium is a protein pump inhibitor, also known as a PPI drug, which is a common treatment for heartburn. Other popular PPI medications include Prilosec and Prevacid. These other PPIs are also linked to serious kidney complications.
Nexium Side Effects
Studies have linked the use of PPI drugs like Nexium with side effects such as bone fracture, pneumonia, and Clostridium difficile infection, a kind of bowel disease.
While it is still uncertain what the cause may be of kidney problems linked with Nexium, one suggestion from the new study is that kidneys might lose their ability to filter blood, allowing dangerous toxins to build up in the body, which can be problematic for a number of reasons.
In order to avoid the risk of Nexium kidney injuries and other serious complications altogether, patients should only use PPI drugs if it is medically necessary. Long-term or heavy usage of PPI drugs is more strongly linked with these kinds of severe Nexium kidney injuries.
In an effort to avoid these potentially serious complications if at all possible, doctors may choose to prescribe H2 receptor agonists instead of a PPI medication, avoiding the issue of developing dangerous kidney side effects altogether.
Filing a Nexium Wrongful Death Lawsuit
Millions of Americans may be affected by the risks linked with Nexium and other PPI drugs.
Indeed, according to one study, somewhere around 15 million people were prescribed various PPI drugs in 2013. Other PPI drugs are available over-the-counter, such as Prilosec and Nexium, which indicates that the number of patients using PPIs is much higher than this estimate.
If you or someone you love has experienced Nexium side effects or has died from using Nexium, you may be able to file a Nexium wrongful death lawsuit and receive compensation.
The Nexium Wrongful Death Lawsuit is Case No. 2:16-cv-02741 in the U.S. District Court for the District of Kansas.
