eliquis side effectsEliquis may be a popular and widely used blood thinner medication, but what many people don’t know is that it has been linked to serious side effects, including Eliquis bleeding.

What is Eliquis?

Eliquis, a blood thinner similar to Pradaxa and Xarelto, is prescribed as a preventative measure against strokes and blood clots for patients who are at risk.

These drugs belong to a new class of blood thinner medications called Factor Xa Inhibitors which have moved in to replace warfarin as the standard blood thinner.

Many users choose to switch from warfarin to newer drugs like Eliquis because they do not require the frequent blood monitoring and testing that warfarin users have to undergo.

In some cases, however, lack of blood monitoring and testing may mean that users may not discover Eliquis side effects until they have become too dangerous.

Common Eliquis Side Effects

For most Eliquis users, Eliquis side effects are mild. These side effects generally require no treatment, and go away on their own.

These mild side effects include nausea, easy bruising and minor bleeding, such as a nosebleed. However, some users may suffer from serious Eliquis bleeding, which can be dangerous or even life-threatening.

Eliquis bleeding is often indicated by a variety of symptoms. It is important for blood thinner medication users to look out for these symptoms and seek medical attention of necessary.

Symptoms of major Eliquis bleeding include:

  • Unusual pain/swelling/discomfort
  • Unusual bleeding
  • Prolonged bleeding from cuts or gums
  • Persistent/frequent nosebleeds
  • Unusually heavy menstrual flow
  • Dark urine
  • Coughing up blood
  • Vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds
  • Severe headache
  • Dizziness or fainting
  • Unusual tiredness/weakness
  • Bloody or black stools
  • Difficulty swallowing

Very serious Eliquis bleeding can become fatal. Seek immediate help for serious bleeding if you experience these symptoms:

  • Vision changes
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Weakness on one side of the body

Most blood thinners, including warfarin, do come with an excessive bleeding risk. However, warfarin has an antidote to treat its bleeding complications.

Unlike warfarin, Eliquis does not yet have an approved antidote to counteract the bleeding. This means that in situations where a patient is bleeding excessively due to Eliquis, such as a car accident or emergency surgery, the blood thinner cannot be reversed to allow life-saving blood clots to form.

Eliquis Bleeding Lawsuits

Some injured patients have responded by filing Eliquis bleeding lawsuits. These lawsuits allege that Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, Inc., the drug’s manufacturers, failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the severity of the Eliquis bleeding risk.

Some lawsuits go further, alleging that the companies actively misled the public and medical community about the safety and efficacy of Eliquis in comparison with traditional drugs like warfarin.

While filing an Eliquis bleeding lawsuit cannot reveres the damage of Eliquis side effects, it may be able to help with financial expenses incurred by medical bills or lost wages.

If you or someone you love has taken Eliquis or a similar blood thinner medication that has resulted in Eliquis bleeding, you may be able to file a lawsuit.
