Eliquis, a blood thinner medication, has been linked with a series of Eliquis side effects ranging from mild nausea to severe bleeding.
Eliquis Side Effects
Not all Eliquis side effects are serious or fatal, and not everyone who takes Eliquis medication experiences side effects. However, mild Eliquis side effects include the following:
- Nausea
- Easy Bruising
- Minor bleeding (i.e. nosebleed)
While these are minor Eliquis side effects and cannot cause severe damage by themselves, take notice if they worsen and contact your doctor promptly.
One of the more serious Eliquis side effects is major bleeding. Symptoms of major bleeding include:
- Unusual pain/swelling/discomfort
- Unusual bleeding
- Prolonged bleeding from cuts or gums
- Persistent/frequent nosebleeds
- Unusually heavy menstrual flow
- Dark urine
- Coughing up blood
- Vomit that is bloody or looks like coffee grounds
- Severe headache
- Dizziness or fainting
- Unusual tiredness/weakness
- Bloody or black stools
- Difficulty swallowing
Sometimes very serious bleeding can be fatal. Signs of extremely serious bleeding that requires immediate medical help include:
- Vision changes
- Confusion
- Slurred speech
- Weakness on one side of the body
What is Eliquis Medication?
Eliquis medication is an oral blood thinner similar to Pradaxa and Xarelto, and is used to prevent strokes and blood clots. These three medications belong to the class of drugs called Factor Xa Inhibitors, and have been quickly replacing warfarin as a standard blood thinner drug.
The switch from warfarin, a more traditional blood thinner, to Eliquis blood thinner or other similar medications may be because Eliquis does not require the frequent blood testing that warfarin does.
However, some suggest that possible Eliquis side effects may outweigh the benefits of the drug over warfarin. For the worst blood thinner side effects, excessive bleeding, warfarin has an antidote to counteract its effects. Eliquis does not have a similar antidote, which increases the risk that severe bleeding can be fatal.
Eliquis Blood Thinner Lawsuits
Many patients have chosen to file Eliquis side effects lawsuits after experiencing the side effects firsthand, claiming that the drug’s manufacturers failed to adequately warn the public and the medical community about the dangers associated with the drug.
Eliquis manufacturers, Bristol-Myers Squibb and Pfizer, Inc., have been accused in these lawsuits of actively misleading the public and the medical community about the safety and efficacy of Eliquis, placing patients at risk of severe medical problems.
Eliquis blood thinner lawsuits allege that, had these patients been fully aware of the risks they were taking when antidotes for alternative drugs were available, they may have chosen an alternative blood thinner medication.
Filing an Eliquis side effects lawsuit can help with financial needs plaintiffs may suffer by way of medical expenses and lost wages.
If you or someone you know has taken Eliquis blood thinner and have subsequently experienced severe bleeding or any of these other Eliquis side effects, you may have cause for filing an Eliquis lawsuit.
