16 Yr. Old Girl Contracts Zithromax Stevens Johnson Syndrome
By Jessica Tyner

After taking Zithromax for just two days, blisters began to form on Whitney’s mouth. At first, her mother Janell just thought they were canker sores, often brought on by stress. However, the condition quickly worsened with swollen lips and extremely bloodshot eyes. Janell called the doctor, worried about an allergic reaction, but was told that it was probably just the virus running its course and nothing to worry about. The doctor was wrong.
The Early Onset of Z-Pak Stevens Johnson Syndrome
Whitney’s symptoms worsened with a high fever, inability to eat or drink, and she began having difficulty breathing. By the March 16th, Whitney’s parents drove her to the emergency room in a nearby larger town where they hoped she could be properly treated. These doctors also diagnosed a routine virus and sent the family home. Whitney didn’t improve, and Janell began to worry about dehydration.
Whitney’s lips began peeling from the blisters, her eyes were caked shut from the discharge, and she had developed spots on her body similar to chicken pox. Janell took her back to the original clinic, and by now Whitney’s condition was so severe that she was referred to an infectious disease doctor. He immediately diagnosed Whitney with Stevens Johnson Syndrome (SJS) and she was rushed to a nearby hospital.
SJS and Zithromax
Just like Whitney, there are other Zithromax patients who develop SJS. Whitney had lost 20 pounds during her nearly three-week ordeal, and doctors say she was on the brink of it being fatal. Stevens Johnson Syndrome can come on quickly, and oftentimes the symptoms are mistaken for something minor like a virus. Whitney was hospitalized for three days and given an immense amount of hydration via IV. Whitney is one of the “lucky” ones.
Fortunately, she did not suffer from loss of vision or blindness – a common side effect of Stevens Johnson Syndrome that was possible given that the blisters had spread to her eyes. Other Zithromax SJS victims don’t pull through so easily. SJS is serious, moves quickly and can cause debilitating lifelong issues or even death. It’s caused by an allergic reaction to many medications, including Zithromax, Z-Pak and azithromycin.
