couple watching movie on samsung plasma tvA settlement website has been established for a proposed deal which would resolve claims from Samsung plasma TV purchasers.

The settlement, which was granted preliminary approval on Nov. 1, will benefit Californians who own a Samsung plasma TV (model numbers PN51F5500, PN51F5300, or PN51F5350) that experiences a “line” issue and needs a replacement plasma display panel.

While the website is live, it is not accepting claims yet. Top Class Actions will provide claim filing instructions as soon as they become available.

Plaintiffs in the Samsung plasma TV class action claimed that the electronics company manufactured defective televisions that showed a “line” defect. This defect reportedly resulted in lines on the TV display.

Samsung allegedly failed to provide extra parts for the TVs that were available for consumers to purchase. This reportedly violated California law and forced consumers to purchase new, expensive TVs rather than buy reasonably priced parts to repair the issue.

The company attempted to dodge the Samsung plasma TV class action, but had their request denied. Later, the company reportedly agreed to settle the claims against them in a Samsung plasma TV class action settlement.

Under the preliminarily approved class action settlement, California consumers will be able to seek one of three types of compensation. The first form of compensation is a replacement plasma display panel which Class Members can purchase. If this is not available, Class Members can reportedly exchange their TV for a comparable model or receive a refund of the estimated purchase price of their current TV.

Settlement Class Members have until Nov. 30, 2021 to seek relief under the settlement. Consumers can contact their local authorized service center to seek the relief, assuming the settlement is granted final approval.

The deadline to object to the settlement is Jan. 31, 2020. The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Feb. 27, 2020.

This is not the first iteration of the Samsung plasma TV class action settlement. Around a month before the current settlement was given preliminary approval, U.S. District Judge William Alsup denied preliminary approval for the first version of the settlement.

According to Judge Alsup’s denial, the first Samsung plasma TV class action settlement did not provide adequate compensation for Class Members. Instead, the majority of the deal was reportedly directed towards attorneys’ fees and named plaintiff awards.

The court also took issue with the settlement agreement which “explicitly prohibited any form of notice to the class.” Judge Alsup argued that this was an intentional attempt to not provide benefits to Class Members.

Changes made to the Samsung plasma TV class action settlement reportedly resulted in the settlement being granted preliminary approval.
