UMR has agreed to a settlement with the U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) to resolve claims that it denied health benefits for urinary drug screening (UDS).

The UMR settlement benefits participants and beneficiaries of employer-sponsored health plans administered by UMR who had UDS claims denied because the company determined the screenings were not medically necessary.

The DOL alleged that UMR denied health benefits for urinary drug screenings despite the tests being medically necessary for patients. The DOL claims UMR insurance denials violated the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA) by denying these benefits.

UMR is a third-party health benefits administrator that works with employers to provide health benefits to their employees.

UMR has not admitted any wrongdoing but has agreed to resolve the DOL’s allegations with a settlement.

Under the terms of the UMR settlement, class members can receive a baseline payment of $68.85 for each covered UDS claim. Class members who have documentation proving they paid more than $68.85 out of pocket for a covered claim can receive an additional payment of up to $103.27 per claim. This brings the total possible payment per claim to $172.12.

Class members with a covered ER claim can receive up to $353.22 per claim. Class members can receive payments for both UDS and ER claims.

There is no exclusion or objection deadline for this settlement.

The final approval hearing for the UMR insurance denials settlement has not yet been scheduled.

The deadline to submit a claim form is Sept. 2, 2025. Class members who received a mailed notice from the settlement administrator do not need to take any action to receive their baseline payment. However, class members must file a claim to receive their additional payment.
