California employees can benefit from a $2.235 million Pacific Bell settlement resolving claims the telephone company violated state wage laws.

The settlement benefits Pacific Bell employees employed in California between April 26, 2018, and March 21, 2024.

According to the class action lawsuit, Pacific Bell violated California labor laws by underpaying employees and failing to compensate workers for business expenses. Plaintiffs in the case filed claims under California’s Private Attorneys General Act (PAGA), a state law that allows workers to file claims on behalf of other workers and the state’s Labor and Workforce Development Agency.

Pacific Bell is a telephone company AT&T owns.

Pacific Bell hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $2.235 million to resolve the wage and hour class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive a settlement payment if they worked for Pacific Bell between April 10, 2018, and March 21, 2014 and a PAGA payment if they worked for the company between April 10, 2021, and March 21, 2024.

Pacific Bell previously returned settlement payments to some employees through an individual settlement program. Class members who accepted their ISP payment will not receive a class settlement payment. Class members who did not accept the ISP payments will receive their share of that settlement fund through a class settlement payment.

All class members are eligible for a PAGA settlement payment even if they accepted an ISP payment.

No payment estimates are available at this time. Payments will vary depending on the number of qualifying workweeks worked by each class member.

The exclusion deadline for the settlement is June 27, 2024, though class members cannot opt out of receiving a PAGA payment. There is no objection deadline for the settlement.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Aug. 7, 2024.

No action is required to benefit from the settlement. Class members who do not exclude themselves will receive a class settlement payment if they are eligible. All class members will automatically receive a PAGA payment.
