Consumers who purchased a prepaid phone or other prepaid wireless telecommunications service product from a Walmart or a Sam’s Club store in Missouri may be eligible to receive a monetary benefit thanks to a recent $600,000 class action lawsuit settlement.

According to the settlement website, settlement Class Members include all consumers who purchased a prepaid wireless telecommunications service product from a Walmart or a Sam’s Club store in Missouri between Jan. 1, 2019, and Jan. 31, 2020.

Plaintiffs allege they were overcharged when they purchased the prepaid phone or other prepaid wireless telecommunications service products because Walmart over-collected the prepaid wireless telecommunications service charge. Products include, but aren’t limited to, a prepaid phone itself or data minutes.

Walmart and Sam’s Club deny all liability and all the allegations made by the plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit.

About 10 percent of all American cellphone users are still using prepaid plans, according to HowStuffWorks. Many of these Americans get their plans through stores like Walmart, as was the case for the plaintiffs in Missouri.

Eligible Class Members are divided into two groups.

Approved Class 1 claimants are able to make a valid claim but don’t have additional documents to prove their purchases. These Class Members will receive a one-time payment of $3.

Approved Class 2 claimants do have verifiable proof of their purchase or purchases in the form of receipts or other records. These Class Members will receive $3 for the first $15 of each purchase, up to a maximum total award of $20.

A final approval hearing is scheduled for March 17, 2022.

Class Members who wish to pursue an individual lawsuit against Walmart and Sam’s Club stories regarding this matter should exclude themselves from this settlement Class. Class Members who file for an exclusion will no longer be eligible to receive a payment from this settlement. Exclusions must be sent by Jan. 11, 2022.

Class Members who disagree with the terms of the settlement but want to remain in the Class must file an objection by the same date.

Class Members who do not act will not be able to collect compensation but will remain bound by the settlement agreement. That means these individuals won’t have the right to seek out similar litigation against Walmart in the future.

Eligible Class Members who do want to receive their fair share of the settlement fund must file a timely claim.

The deadline to file a claim in this class action settlement is Jan. 11, 2022.
