Honda has agreed to pay up to $2 million to resolve allegations the Honda transmission in certain vehicles was defective.
Eligible Class Members are California residents who are the original owners of any of the following vehicles that have a five-speed automatic transmission, and who were still the owners of the vehicle as of Dec. 7, 2015:
- Model year 2003-2004 Honda Accord V6.
- Model year 2002-2004 Honda Odyssey.
- Model year 2003-2004 Honda Pilot.
- Model year 2001-2002 Acura MDX.
- Model year 2003 Acura 3.2 TL Type S with VIN range: 19UUA5…3A019062-093971.
- Model year 2003 Acura 3.2 CL Type S with VIN range: 19UYA42…3A005204-016337.
The Honda transmission class action lawsuit initially was filed by lead plaintiff Janet Case on Oct. 19, 2009. An amended complaint was filed in 2011.
Case alleged the transmissions of certain Honda and Acura vehicles had a defect and the company violated California law by failing to disclose it had a policy of making warranty adjustments and accommodations and adjustments for issues related to those vehicles’ transmissions.
Rather than the Court deciding in favor of one of the parties, both sides have agreed to a settlement in the Honda transmission case, believing the settlement to be best for the Class.
Under the terms of the Honda transmission settlement, Class Members may receive either reimbursement or a $25 credit.
Class Members are eligible for 100% reimbursement on their out-of-pocket expenses they paid for Honda parts related to a replacement of their vehicle’s transmission prior to the vehicle reaching 93 months or 109,000 miles from its original purchase, whichever of the two comes first.
Consumers choosing reimbursement must submit a claim form with supporting documentation.
Class Members who did not replace their Honda transmission or are otherwise not entitled to receive reimbursement will receive the $25 credit toward the purchase of Honda parts. The credit may be used only toward purchases for the Class Vehicle, not for any other Honda or Acura.
Those eligible for the $25 credit do not need to take any action to benefit from the Honda transmission settlement; they will be entitled to the credit automatically.
According to the settlement agreement, Honda will pay up to a total of $2 million in reimbursements. If the total amount of reimbursements claimed exceeds $2 million, each Class Member will have their reimbursement reduced proportionately.
Consumers who had their Honda transmission replaced at an independent mechanic or body shop must submit documentation of that replacement showing you or someone acting on your behalf and is not an insurance-based entity, paid out of pocket for the parts. Examples of such documentation include invoices, repair orders or receipts.
Consumers who had their transmission replaced by an authorized Honda or Acura dealership must include with their claim form documentation showing the vehicle’s transmission was replaced and the cost of the repair; however, proof of payment is not required.
Honda may investigate claims and has the ability to reject them if they are found to have been paid for by someone not in the Class or someone acting on the Class Member’s behalf and is not either an insurance-based entity or third-party warrantor.
A final approval hearing on the Honda transmission settlement has been set for Jan. 19, 2021.
The deadline to submit a claim form is Jan. 12, 2021.

I had to replace the transmission twice, within the first 6 years of owning my 2003 honda. I’m hoping I receive a postcard, because I’m the original owner, still have the car, and missed 1/12/21 late on the deadline. How long was this classaction posted?
I had to replace the transmission twice in my new 2008 honda fit. I live in NY. Can we start a suit for states other than California?
Why is this lawsuit against Honda only for original owners residing in California? I purchased my 2004 Accord V6 in Texas and replaced the transmission for the same reasons.
Please add me to this class action against HONDA 5-SPEED AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION care BC424169. Thanks !
