GM recall ignition switch defect

A $121.1 million class action settlement has been reached to resolve a GM ignition switch lawsuit alleging a dangerous defect.

The settlement benefits individuals who owned or leased a subject vehicle before the vehicle was announced to be part of a recall. This includes consumers whose vehicles were affected by one of five recalls regarding the Delta ignition switch (NHTSA Recall No. 14v047), key rotation (NHTSA Recall Nos. 14v355, 14v394, and 14v400), Camaro knee-key issues (NHTSA Recall No. 14v346) electronic power steering (NHTSA Recall No. 14v153) and/or side airbags (NHTSA Recall No. 14v118).

Numerous vehicles are covered by each recall notice. Consumers can check their eligibility through the settlement website’s VIN lookup.

GM vehicles have been subject to numerous recalls over the years, leading several consumers to file lawsuits against the auto company. According to the plaintiffs, the GM ignition switch recall and other issues have caused financial injury due to a lower trade in value, along with other issues.

The GM ignition switch defect allegedly stemmed from an issue with the switch circuitry which causes ignitions to switch from the “on” position to either the “standby” or “auxiliary position.” As a result, the vehicles allegedly turn off and the air bags become deactivated.

According to the GM ignition switch lawsuit allegations, this defect and others could result in crashes while in use – made even more tragic by the lack of airbags. Allegedly, nearly 30 deaths were linked to this issue by 2014.

GM has not admitted any wrongdoing surrounding their ignition switch or other recalls, but agreed to a $121.1 million GM ignition switch economic settlement.com to resolve the claims against them.

After fees and costs are deducted from the GM ignition switch economic settlement.com fund, the remaining money will be used for payments to Class Members. Payment amounts will depend on the number of claims filed, although individuals affected by the GM ignition switch issue and key rotation issue will receive larger payments than individuals covered by the other recalls.

In order to benefit from the GM ignition switch economic settlement.com, Class Members must file a valid claim form by March 18, 2021. Claim forms may require VIN numbers, vehicle information, repair documentation or other proof, depending on whether a Class Member sold the vehicle.

The deadline for exclusion and objection in the settlement is Oct. 19, 2020. The final approval hearing for the GM ignition switch economic settlement.com is Dec. 18, 2020.

Who’s Eligible

Individuals who owned or leased a subject vehicle before the vehicle was announced to be part of a recall. This includes consumers whose vehicles were affected by the following five recall issues:

  1. Delta Ignition Switch (NHTSA Recall No. 14v047)
  2. Key Rotation (NHTSA Recall Nos. 14v355, 14v394, and 14v400)
  3. Camaro Knee-Key (NHTSA Recall No. 14v346)
  4. Electronic Power Steering (NHTSA Recall No. 14v153)
  5. Side Airbag (NHTSA Recall No. 14v118)

Numerous vehicles are covered by each recall notice. Consumers can check their eligibility through the settlement website’s VIN lookup.

Potential Award

Cash payments of varying sizes.

Individuals affected by the GM ignition switch issue and key rotation issue will receive larger payments than individuals covered by the other recalls, although exact payment amounts will depend on the number of claims filed.

Proof of Purchase

A unique notice ID is required to submit a claim online. Claim forms may require VIN numbers, repair documentation, or other proof, depending on whether a Class Member sold the vehicle.

Had a 2002 Chevy Impala. In July of 2013 was in an accident and car was totalled. Explained to my insurance car suddenly shut off leaving me no brakes or power steering causing me to run a red light and crash into cross traffic. They told me they couldn’t find a recalls filed on it. I was rold there was nothing more they could do so I took a loss on my, my injuries and time off work. Was never notified of lawsuit until recently receiving a card including me in class action. Should I be part of the class action or am I supposed to be filing something else. Do I even qualify for a case.

    • Angela Camacho October 15, 2020

sorry that was, “loss on my car”, from above comment.
Also most severe injures included fractured ribs, cracked jaw and minor concussion.

What happens if you lost the cards they sent you which had my VIN numbers on each of them. I totaled out 2 cars because of the ignition issue. First one hit a telephone pole and second one slammed into the back of a truck while I was trying to stop for a red light.

  • Megan McManus September 9, 2020

  • Jack September 3, 2020

I was sent a letter, but I was also able to find my VIN through old insurance cards and lease documents.

  • Kamala Selvidge September 1, 2020

Owned a 2012 Chevrolet Impala, but traded it in on another vehicle 2017, i don’t remember the VIN to check but I do remember getting a recall and asking a local chevrolet dealer about it, they said i didn’t need anything replaced, however they never checked it out, so how would they know.

How do I find out my share of lawsuit,I already filed a claim?

  • Susan August 16, 2020

How long after filing will it take before we hear back about the settlement, either way?

  • Gabby August 15, 2020

So I’ve filed my claim. Settlement amount is 120 million . With 2.6 million vehicles recalled. Can we anticipate a large settlement? I’m thinking maybe $30 dollars or so after fees and court costs. Anyone have any insight?

    • Joel August 21, 2020

Gabby, this is a good question. I must be lucky because I have 2 GM vehicles in this and both were totaled, 06 Malibu was definitely faulty ignition-lost power and went over a 40 foot enbankment flipped 6x + no airbags. Was told back then my VIN was not recalled by 1 month cutoff. Im in the ford focus lawsuit now that settlement is being thrown out because it was a back alley deal where ford was getting off cheap with the help of a lawfirm that did a quick settlement and the owners was getting 100 dollars and the lawfirm was getting millions. Sound familiar? I have more info and have been searching for awhile trying to talk to someone live and it seems funny you cant do that. Going to talk to my ford attorney who is averaging about 70,000 $ settlements. Find me if you want on social media. Joey Swis

I owned a 2004 Cadillac CTS and we forever had it in the shop for electrical trouble. We drive the car to the store and when we return to the car the car wouldn’t start. We would have to leave the car there and come back in hour and the car would start up. The Cadillac department couldn’t get the car running like it should. We finally traded the car in and they sent us recall letters once a month about the electonic ignition box .

    Thank R. Wright

  • Michael W. August 8, 2020

I received a letter and the unique ID and the VIN, year, and make match everything but I didn’t want to submit a claim because I was actually in a terrible car accident inside 2003 Impala back in 2007- was ejected from vehicle as it flipped over several times and landed some ways from vehicle. Broke my back and needed neurosurgery. I don’t want to give my rights away by submitting this claim. Is there anyone I can speak with regarding this matter? Thanks.

Most dangerous vehicle I have ever owned . I saw this posted on problems with 2000 Chevrolet Impala. People like me spending hundreds of dollars to try and fix it and couldn’t.
