Google has agreed to pay $8.75 million to settle claims it violated Illinois privacy laws by collecting biometric data from students using its Google Workspace for Education platform.

The Google biometric data class action settlement benefits individuals who had a voice model or face model created or had the Voice Match or Face Match feature enabled in their Google Workspace for Education account while enrolled in a school in Illinois between March 26, 2015, and May 15, 2025.

The class action lawsuit that the settlement resolves had alleged that Google collected and stored biometrics from students using its Google Workspace for Education platform without getting consent from the students or their parents. Plaintiffs in the case say that Google’s actions violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA).

Google Workspace for Education is a free suite of Google apps for schools that includes Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Slides, Meet and more.

Google has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to an $8.75 million settlement to resolve the BIPA class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Google biometric data class action settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. According to the settlement website, each claimant is estimated to receive between $30 and $100. Exact payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed and other factors.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Sept. 1, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Google privacy class action lawsuit is scheduled for Oct. 14, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Oct. 16, 2025.
