City of Hope has agreed to a $8.5 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised patient information.
The settlement benefits individuals who received a data breach notice from City of Hope in April 2024 informing them their information may have been compromised in a data breach discovered in October 2023.
Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit accused City of Hope of failing to prevent a data breach that occurred in October 2023. The breach compromised sensitive patient information including Social Security numbers and health data.
City of Hope, a cancer treatment and research center with locations in California, has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to this $8.5 million settlement to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the settlement, class members can receive up to $5,000 for documented losses related to the data breach. This includes out-of-pocket expenses and up to four hours of lost time compensated at a rate of $25 per hour.
Class members who did not experience documented losses can receive an alternative cash payment of $100. These payments may be increased or decreased depending on the number of claims filed.
California class members can receive an additional statutory payment of $250.
All class members, regardless of whether they experienced documented losses, can receive a code to enroll in a medical information protection and credit monitoring service through CyEx.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 15, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the City of Hope data breach settlement is scheduled for Feb. 20, 2026.
