The U.S. Department of Justice has agreed to pay $7.9 million to resolve claims it discriminated against veterans with disabilities in hiring and employment practices.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons settlement benefits disabled veterans with a 30% service-connected disability rating or higher who were terminated, had their conditional job offer withdrawn or were removed from consideration as an applicant for employment between Aug. 20, 2018, and June 18, 2025, due to the Federal Bureau of Prisons’ failure to rely on current medical documentation to determine their medical qualifications.
According to the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), the Federal Bureau of Prisons discriminated against veterans with disabilities by failing to rely on current medical documentation when determining if these veterans were medically qualified for their jobs. This discrimination allegedly caused veterans to be terminated, have their job offers rescinded or be removed from consideration for employment.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons is a branch of the U.S. Department of Justice that manages federal prisons.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $7.9 million settlement to resolve the EEOC class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Federal Bureau of Prisons settlement, class members can receive a cash payment. Payments will vary depending on the claimant’s alleged damages.
Class members who were terminated from their jobs or had their job offers rescinded may receive a larger share of the settlement fund than class members who were not hired or were removed from consideration for employment.
The deadline for objection is Nov. 7, 2025.
To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 7, 2025.
