Morrison Community Hospital agreed to a $675,000 class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2023 data breach that compromised patient information.

The Morrison Community Hospital settlement benefits individuals who received a notification from Morrison Community Hospital informing them their information may have been compromised in a data breach on or about Sept. 24, 2023.

The Morrison Community Hospital data breach reportedly compromised names, addresses, dates of birth, Social Security numbers and sensitive medical information. Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit claim Morrison Community Hospital failed to implement reasonable cybersecurity measures that could have prevented the breach.

Morrison Community Hospital is a 25-bed critical access hospital in Morrison, Illinois.

Morrison Community Hospital hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $675,000 to resolve the data breach class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Morrison Community Hospital settlement, class members can receive up to $5,000 for documented losses related to the data breach. These losses can include fraudulent charges, identity theft damages, professional fees, credit expenses, bank fees, travel costs, communication charges and other damages incurred as a result of the Morrison Community Hospital data breach.

Class members who did not experience unreimbursed losses or who do not wish to claim these damages can receive a pro rata cash payment from the settlement instead. The amount of these payments will vary depending on the number of claims filed with the settlement. No payment estimates are available.

The deadline for exclusion and objection was Jan. 6, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Feb. 28, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 5, 2025.
