Google agreed to a $5 million class action settlement to resolve claims it violated California’s automatic renewal law with Google Play subscriptions.
The Google class action settlement benefits consumers in California who paid for at least one renewal term of a Google subscription through a Google Play checkout screen billed through Google Play billing from May 30, 2014, to Oct. 27, 2019, for personal, family or household purposes. This excludes subscriptions for Google Drive, subscriptions that were canceled during a free trial and subscriptions that were fully refunded by Google.
Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim Google failed to follow California’s automatic renewal law when selling subscriptions through the Google Play Store. As a result, consumers were allegedly charged for renewing subscriptions without being properly notified.
Google has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $5 million to resolve the subscription class action lawsuit.
Under the terms of the Google class action settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the amount they paid for Google Play subscriptions. According to the settlement website, each class member is estimated to receive $5.85.
Payments will be distributed as Google Play account credits. Class members who do not have an active Google Play account will receive their payment as a Zelle or PayPal payment. If the settlement administrator is unable to make an electronic payment, the value of the payment will be returned to the settlement fund and redistributed to class members.
Any funds remaining in the settlement fund after distribution will be donated to a non-profit organization approved by the court.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is May 9, 2026.
The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for July 23, 2026.
No claim form is required to benefit from the Google Play Store settlement. Class members who do not exclude themselves will automatically receive settlement benefits.
