$35M GM fuel pump class action settlement

A $35 million General Motors fuel pump settlement resolves claims the company equipped GMC Sierra and Chevrolet Silverado trucks with defective engine parts.

The settlement benefits consumers who purchased certain 2011-2016 Chevrolet Silverado or GMC Sierra diesel trucks from a GM-authorized dealership in California, Florida, Illinois, Iowa, New York, Pennsylvania or Texas between March 1, 2010, and Sept. 13, 2024.

Class members can check their eligibility using the VIN lookup tool on the settlement website.

The class action lawsuit claims GM sold trucks with defective fuel injection pumps that cause engine failure. These pumps allegedly generate metal shavings that contaminate the fuel injection system.

General Motors is an automotive manufacturer that sells vehicles under the Buick, Cadillac, GMC and Chevrolet brands.

GM hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $35 million to resolve the engine defect class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the GM fuel pump settlement, class members can receive between $6,356 to $12,712 for past fuel pump repairs that were not covered under warranty. Repair reimbursement will vary depending on the number of claims filed.

The settlement also establishes a 12-month warranty extension to cover 50% of repair costs for trucks with less than 200,000 miles. These payments may be around $5,000 but will vary depending on the actual repair costs.

Class members who no longer own their trucks and did not pay out of pocket for repairs can receive pro rata payments estimated to be between $400 and $800.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Dec. 12, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 21, 2025.

To receive GM fuel pump settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form within six months of the final approval date. Based on the scheduled final approval date, the claim deadline is on or around July 21, 2025.
