$225K Saint Croix Regional Medical Center data breach class action settlement

A $225,000 St. Croix Regional Medical Center settlement resolves claims that the health system charged excessive fees on medical records requests.

The settlement benefits patients and other authorized individuals who requested a patient’s health care records from St. Croix Regional Medical Center Inc. and directly or indirectly paid a request, basic, retrieval, certification or other fee since Nov. 20, 2013.

Plaintiffs in the class action lawsuit claim St. Croix Regional Medical Center charged excessive fees on health records requests. These fees allegedly violated Wisconsin laws.

St. Croix Regional Medical Center is a health system that serves patients in both Wisconsin and Minnesota.

St. Croix Regional Medical Center hasn’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $225,000 to resolve the medical record fee class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the St. Croix Regional Medical Center settlement, class members can receive up to 1.5 times the amount they paid in medical records fees during the class period. Patient class members are eligible for payments for all fees they paid directly and those passed along by requestor class members that they paid indirectly. Requestor class members are eligible for payment if they can prove they paid the fees and did not pass along the fees to a patient class member.

The deadline for exclusion is Nov. 18, 2024. The deadline for objection is Nov. 1, 2024.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for Jan. 31, 2025.

To receive a St. Croix Regional Medical Center settlement payment, patient and requestor class members must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 18, 2024.
