The New England Patriots agreed to a $2.16 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims that the team violated federal privacy laws by sharing information about app users who watched videos on the Patriots app.
The New England Patriots settlement benefits individuals who used the New England Patriots app with location services enabled and who requested or obtained any prerecorded or on-demand videos available on the app between Feb. 1, 2022, and May 30, 2025.
According to the New England Patriots class action lawsuit, the team’s app shared information about app users who watched videos on the app with third parties. This information allegedly included personally identifiable information that was shared in violation of the federal Video Privacy Protection Act (VPPA).
The New England Patriots are a professional football team based in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
The Patriots have not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $2.16 million class action settlement to resolve the VPPA allegations.
Under the terms of the New England Patriots settlement, class members can receive an equal share of the net settlement fund. Exact payment amounts will vary depending on the number of claims filed but are not estimated in the settlement agreement. Class members who wish to receive their payment electronically can choose to receive their share via Venmo or PayPal.
The Patriots also agreed to make changes to their app in order to comply with the VPPA. The team will suspend any known transmissions of precise geolocation data in connection with video viewing until the VPPA is amended or the Patriots obtain compliant consent from app users.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is Aug. 28, 2025.
The final approval hearing for the New England Patriots class action settlement is scheduled for Oct. 9, 2025.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Nov. 23, 2025.
