General Motors and LG Electronics agreed to a $150 million class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims the duo manufactured Chevrolet Bolt vehicles with defective batteries that could cause fires.

The Chevy Bolt settlement benefits individuals who purchased or leased a 2017-2022 Chevrolet Bolt EV that was built and shipped to a dealer on or before Aug. 19, 2021.

According to the class action lawsuit, GM manufactured the Chevrolet Bolt with defective LG batteries that could cause fires. Drivers claim that, despite knowing about the Chevy Bolt battery defect, GM and LG failed to warn consumers or take financial responsibility.

Chevrolet is an automotive brand that GM owns. The Chevrolet Bolt is an electric vehicle equipped with an LG battery.

GM and LG haven’t admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to pay $150 million to resolve the battery defect class action lawsuit.

Under the terms of the Chevy Bolt settlement, class members can receive a cash payment based on the remedy their vehicle received or was eligible to receive.

Class members whose vehicles were eligible for a battery replacement can receive a $700 payment. Former owners and lessees of these vehicles may receive this payment if their vehicles became eligible for a software remedy after they sold or terminated their lease.

The settlement also provides non-monetary relief: GM agreed to provide advanced diagnostic software to detect battery anomalies.

Class members whose vehicles received a software remedy can receive a payment of $1,400.

The deadline for objection is Jan. 24, 2025. The deadline for exclusion is Feb. 24, 2025.

The final approval hearing for the Chevy Bolt battery defect settlement is scheduled for March 25, 2025.

To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 24, 2025.
