Shields Health Care Group agreed to pay $15.35 million as part of a class action lawsuit settlement to resolve claims it failed to prevent a 2022 data breach that compromised patient information.

The Shields Health Group settlement benefits individuals whose personal information was impacted by the Shields Health Care Group data breach between March 7 and March 21, 2022.

There are two subclasses involved in the settlement: one for Massachusetts residents and one for non-Massachusetts residents.

The Shields data breach reportedly compromised sensitive patient information such as Social Security numbers and health data. According to the class action lawsuit, the health care group could have prevented the breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures.

Class members can claim up to $2,500 for ordinary losses such as credit report costs, credit monitoring, communication charges and up to five hours of lost time at a rate of $30 per hour.

Class members who experienced extraordinary losses such as identity theft, fraud, false tax returns, real estate title fraud, financial fraud, government benefits fraud or other misuse of their personal information can claim up to $25,000 in reimbursement for these losses. This includes up to 20 hours of lost time at a rate of $30 per hour.

Class members who did not experience any documented losses or time spent responding to the data breach can claim a one-time $50 cash payment.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Nov. 25, 2025.
