Comcast agreed to a $117.5 million class action settlement to resolve claims it failed to protect consumer information from a 2023 data breach.
The class action settlement benefits consumers who received a data breach notification from Comcast informing them their information may have been compromised in a data breach between Oct. 16 and 19, 2023, which was publicly disclosed by Comcast in December 2023.
Comcast is an internet and cable provider that serves consumers and businesses across the country.
Affected consumers quickly took legal action against Comcast, arguing the company failed to protect consumer information from the data breach. Plaintiffs in the data breach class action lawsuit claim Comcast could have prevented the breach through reasonable cybersecurity measures.
Comcast has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $117.5 million class action settlement to resolve the allegations.
Under the terms of the Comcast settlement, class members can receive reimbursement for out-of-pocket expenses and lost time.
Class members can claim up to $10,000 in compensation for documented out-of-pocket losses, including identity theft, fraud, credit expenses, communication charges and credit monitoring costs. Class members can also claim up to five hours of lost time at a rate of $30 per hour.
Class members who do not wish to make a claim for out-of-pocket expenses and lost time can instead receive an alternative cash payment of $50. These payments may be adjusted based on the number of claims filed with the settlement.
The settlement also provides three years of identity defense services and restoration services through CyEx Financial Shield Complete.
These services include one-bureau credit monitoring, dark web monitoring, real-time authentication alerts, high-risk transaction monitoring, lost wallet protection, $1 million in identity theft insurance and monthly credit score tracking.
The deadline for exclusion and objection is June 1, 2026.
The final approval hearing for the Comcast settlement is scheduled for July 7, 2026.
To receive settlement benefits, class members must submit a valid claim form by Aug. 14, 2026.
