Certain employees in California, Arizona, Texas, or Florida who worked as Facebook content moderators may be eligible for monetary compensation thanks to a recent $52 million class action lawsuit settlement resolving complaints of employee trauma.

Settlement Class Members include current or former Facebook content moderators who worked for the company in California, Arizona, Texas, or Florida between Sep. 15, 2015, and Aug. 14, 2020. Content moderators may have worked for Facebook as an employee, or they may have done work as a subcontractor for one or more Facebook vendors.

According to the class action lawsuit, plaintiffs allege Facebook failed to provide a safe work environment for content moderators, who may have suffered from trauma-related injuries, such as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), as a result of repeatedly being exposed to graphic and objectionable material. Class Members, the plaintiffs allege, were at an increased risk of suffering bodily injuries, too.

The company denies the plaintiffs’ allegations and does not believe it has done anything wrong. Facebook does not accept legal liability for the plaintiffs’ claims.

Despite that, the plaintiffs and Facebook have determined the proposed settlement agreement is in everyone’s best interests.

Facebook Content Moderator Settlement Benefits

According to the Facebook moderators class action settlement agreement, eligible Class Members can receive a monetary payment and enjoy new practice and tooling enhancements in the future.

Facebook will deposit $52 million into a settlement fund.

First, attorneys’ fees and expenses, service awards to class representatives, and settlement administration costs will be paid from this overall award.

Then, each Class Member will receive a single payment of $1,000. These payments were sent on Oct. 14, 2021, along with claim forms.

Class Members may use this single payment to cover the costs of a medical diagnostic screening, but are not obligated to use this payment for that purpose. From there, the Class Member should save the documentation of their doctor’s diagnosis.

To receive any further payments, each Class Member must submit their claim form along with this documentation, which should highlight a qualifying diagnosis, to the Courts.

The exact value of each Class Members’ payment will vary depending on the associated treatment they expect to need as a result of their diagnosis and condition.

The maximum amount of compensation a Class Member can receive is $50,000.

The Court granted final approval to the Facebook content moderators trauma lawsuit settlement July 14, 2021.

The deadline to object to or opt out of the content moderator settlement has passed.

The deadline to file a claim is March 14, 2022.
