Aura Home Inc., doing business as Aura Frames, agreed to pay nearly $1.9 million to resolve claims it violated Illinois’ biometric privacy law by collecting facial geometry data from Aura account holders.

The Aura Frames settlement benefits individuals who signed up for an Aura account in Illinois and had facial matching data from their photographs collected by Aura between July 16, 2019, and Nov. 4, 2025.

Aura Frames is a smart photo frame company that allows consumers to display digital photos in their homes. The company has a “smart” feature that uses facial recognition to display photos of specific people when they are in the room.

According to a class action lawsuit, Aura violated Illinois’ Biometric Information Privacy Act (BIPA) by failing to get consent before collecting and storing facial geometry data.

BIPA requires companies to get informed, written consent before collecting and storing biometric data, such as facial geometry scans. The law also requires companies to have a written policy for how long they will retain this data and how they will destroy it.

Aura has not admitted any wrongdoing but agreed to a $1.89 million class action settlement to resolve the BIPA lawsuit allegations.

Under the terms of the Aura Frames settlement, class members can receive a cash payment.

Class members who submit a valid claim will receive a payment of up to $13.28 from the settlement. Payments may be reduced on a pro rata basis depending on the number of claims filed with the Aura Frames settlement.

Aura has also agreed to stop collecting facial matching data from Aura users unless it provides BIPA-compliant notices and obtains BIPA-compliant consent. This change will help protect consumer privacy in the future.

The deadline for exclusion and objection is Jan. 16, 2026.

The final approval hearing for the BIPA lawsuit is scheduled for March 12, 2026.

To receive a settlement payment, class members must submit a valid claim form by Feb. 2, 2026.
